life and work

Goldbach studied Sociology at Bielefeld University , Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College , New York City, and Experimental Media Design at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), where he graduated as a master class student in 2005. In 2012 and 2014 he taught as a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.

In his earlier video installations and photographs, Goldbach often visualizes and discusses social issues using the “proxy” motif - a fictional figure who usually appears in multiple forms in the uniformed appearance of the modern city dweller (white shirt, black trousers).

In his most recent video and photo works, he uses architectural concepts and elements to examine the relationship between subjectivity and hierarchical social structures - within the nation state and beyond - against the background of a globally expanding network of these places.

His work has received several work and residency grants (including Villa Aurora Los Angeles, spring 2017) and prizes (including the Paula Modersohn-Becker Jubilee Award 2014). Since 2003 his work has been shown nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions and has been exhibited in the following institutions, among others: Museum der Moderne, Salzburg , Museo Reina Sofia , Madrid, Mori-Art Museum , Tokyo, Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum, Barbican Arts Center , London, Kunsthaus Dresden , Neuer Berliner Kunstverein nbk, Cornerhouse, Manchester, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, Center Pompidou , Paris, ZKM Karlsruhe, documenta 14 public programs, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen , Center Pompidou , Paris, Berlinische Galerie Museum for Contemporary Art Berlin, Museum Ludwig , Cologne.
