Sandra Becker (* 1967 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German video artist living in Berlin who also exhibits under the artist name sandrabecker01 .

Live and act

Sandra Becker is the daughter of the diplomat Volkmar Becker and the judge Gisela Maria Becker. In Königswinter she first attended elementary school and after a time in Turkey , where her father worked at the German embassy in Ankara , the grammar school on Petersberg . In 1979 she moved to South America with her family and attended the Colegio Alexander von Humboldt in Lima . In 1982 she moved to the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium in Bad Godesberg and passed her Abitur there in 1986. During her stays abroad she learned Turkish and Spanish.

In 1987 Becker worked in New York as Assistant Lighting Designer for Giles Hogya at the Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater on Bowery Street . Between 1987 and 1989, followed by studies at the University of Hamburg and the University of Stuttgart in philosophy and architecture , as well as at the University of Design in Offenbach am Main . At the invitation of Central St. Martins College London , she went to London in 1989 and completed her studies there in 1991 as a Theater Designer (Three Dimensional Design) at the Faculty of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Arts (hons).

She then went back to Germany and worked as a designer at the Mainz State Theater . In 1992 she continued her studies in visual communication at the Berlin University of the Arts with Valie Export . In 1993 the Russian Art Academy invited her to Saint Petersburg , where she worked at the Repin Institute . In the same year she wrote her diploma thesis, in which she dealt with the subject of “arrival and departure”. This was followed by a master's degree in experimental film design with Heinz Emigholz , which she completed in 1995 with the 16 mm film "Waiting Room". She received a scholarship to promote young talent from the Berlin Senate for Culture and the DAAD scholarship to New York.

Becker then worked as a lecturer and from 2007 to 2009 was visiting professor for artistic transformation processes at the Berlin University of the Arts . There she was part of a team of eleven professors who worked together to transfer the artistic project “Silent Mail” to university teaching. It is still taught in didactics today. She has been the co-director of the media workshop in the BBK Berlin's cultural center since 2013 .

In 2015 she was visiting professor in Brazil at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). She also teaches at the Free University of Berlin and has been a lecturer in media informatics at the Lette-Verein since summer 2019 .

Becker's work is represented in the collection of the State Museum Majdanek in Lublin (Poland), in the Euro Theater Central Bonn and in the international collection of the New Berlin Art Association.
