Christine Hill

Christine Hill (* 1968 in Binghamton , New York , NY ) is an American artist.

biography

Christine Hill studied art at the College of Art at Maryland Institute in the USA . In 1991 she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts. From 1991 to 1999 she lived permanently in Berlin. One after the other, she worked as a masseuse , vendor's shop, shoe cleaner, rock singer and stripper: these were activities that were directly related to services and also only required short training periods. These tasks gave Christine Hill the opportunity to try out different artistic roles in order to replace the identity of being with its actual originality and authenticity with the identity of doing. Your actions are always provisional and have to be constantly reinvented. Christine Hill worked on the Volksboutique project for four years . In this project she succeeded in dealing with the phenomena: service, interaction , portrait and dialogue . The artist is temporarily present in her projects and seeks dialogue with the audience.

As a contribution to documenta 10 in Kassel in 1997 , she created a shop in the underpass to the old Kassel train station that had previously been set up in Berlin-Mitte. The Volksboutique project consisted of two departments: work was carried out in one and products were exhibited in another. On the one hand it was exhibited and on the other hand second-hand clothing was sold. The artistic installation was brought to life through interactions between the viewer and the artist. The viewer became a customer, the artist a saleswoman. The installation of the people's boutique attempted to create a discussion space and a situation for the exchange of information based on the physical presence of the individuals. She created a space that let her work happen. This provided the basis for information to be exchanged. It was possible to assess one's personal role and determine one's place in society. In 2004 she was initially appointed visiting professor for fashions and public appearances at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, and in 2007 she was appointed professor for fashion and public appearances at the Bauhaus University Weimar . In 2016 she and Jun Yang designed hotel apartments with the title “Hotel Volksboutique” for the gallery for contemporary art in Leipzig .

Christine Hill lives and works alternately in Berlin and New York.
