Kathrin Becker (* 1967 ) is a German curator and has been the director of the video forum since 2001 and managing director of the New Berlin Art Association (NBK) in Berlin since 2003 .

Life

After studying art history and Slavic studies in Bochum, Moscow and St. Petersburg and a two-year stay in the former Soviet Union and Russia from 1989 to 1991, Becker began working as a freelance curator.

While early exhibition projects focused on cultural exchange with the former Soviet Union and Russia (including "Dellbrügge / de Moll: Art Consumer Profiles", CAC Moscow 1994; "Stalin's Choice - Soviet Socialist Realism 1932-1956", PS 1 Museum / The Institute of Contemporary Art , New York 1993; “New Moscow”, ifa galleries Berlin, Stuttgart, Bonn 1999/2000;), developed presentations such as the exhibition series “The Institute of Theore (c) tical Painting” ( Kunst-Werke Berlin 1994–1995) and a whole series of exhibitions on the interference of high and mass culture in art of the early 1990s (e.g. "art club berlin", Art Forum Berlin 1997; "Can you hear me? 2nd Ars Baltica Triennial of Photographic Art", CAC Vilnius, Kunst Haus Dresden and other places 1999-2001) an increasingly international claim.

In 2001 Becker took over the management of the video forum in the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, a video archive that now includes over 1000 titles from the beginnings of video art to the present day. In addition to digitizing the holdings, she was responsible for numerous exhibition projects and collaborations with institutions in Eastern and Western Europe, the USA and Mexico.

In the last few years Becker has increasingly dealt with questions of societal conditions and the political dimensions of art. More interesting to her than documentary or anti-representative strategies are the possibilities of interlinking visuality and ideological mood, as it is e.g. B. in projects like "Masculinities" or "displaced. Interventions / Interactions in Public Space ”(both Berlin 2005) become visible.

On February 1, 2020, Becker took over the artistic direction of the Berlin exhibition center at the Kindl-Zentrum (succeeding founding director Andreas Fiedler).
