Ira Schneider
Ira Schneider (born March 2, 1939 in New York City , USA ) is an American photographer , video , installation and media artist .
Life
In 1956, Ira Schneider began studying experimental psychology and comparative literature at Brown University in New York, completing it in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts. This was followed by a semester abroad in Munich at the Ludwig Maximilians University until 1961, studying art history and linguistics (English philology). This stay triggers his first intensive examination of German-European art history and European film, which he was able to study extensively in the Munich arthouse cinema "Studio für Filmkunst" in Occamstrasse. During this time he also traveled to several major European cities. In 1961, Schneider returned to the United States to study experimental psychology and the philosophy of science at the University of Wisconsin in Madison; In 1964 he did his master’s degree.
Video and photography
Schneider began photography in 1952; work on 16mm films follows. His video pioneering achievement began in the mid-1960s when he followed the nightlife of the New York underground scene on video: In a popular little boutique with a club downstairs where Jimi Hendrix , Janis Joplin , The Doors , The Who and many others other rock musicians will perform. Between 1962 and 1968 he made eight experimental short films, including Lost in Cuddihy and The Ghost of Wittgenstein . He goes to the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and experiments with the video camera; he does not record the musicians, but observes what is happening around Woodstock in the audience, this is how the Woodstock video is created . In 1969 , together with his partner Frank Gillette , Ira Schneider realized the installation Wipe Cycle , which was shown together with works by Nam June Paik in the first group exhibition for video art in New York. In 1970 he founded the newspaper Radical Software , for which he worked as a publisher and editor until 1974. Also in 1970 he became a member of the Raindance Foundation, a media-ecological group. 1974 is his first solo exhibition with the video installation Manhattan is an Island and a group exhibition with the same installation in the Syracuse - Museum of Fine Arts (since 1968 Everson Museum of Fine Arts) New York City. Then follows the video installation Echo from 1975, projected visual echoes of the exhibition visitors. In 1976, Ira Schneider (co / editor Beryl Korot ) published the first book dealing with the new medium of video as an art form in New York, it was called VIDEO ART An Anthology . His installation Time Zones was shown for the first time in 1981 at the Whitney Museum in New York City and in 1984 in a group exhibition with Duchamp , Man Ray , Paik and Monet in Brussels. She was also seen in London, Vienna, Lyon and Mannheim.
One of his most important videos, A Weekend on the Beach with Jean-Luc Godard from 1984, shows the encounter (on the terrace of his beach house in Los Angeles, USA) with Wim Wenders , Jean-Luc Godard and Heiner Müller . With a scholarship, he came to Berlin in 1993, where he now lives and developed his video data room Germany in 1995 . To this day he accompanies Berlin's nightlife with his video camera and still camera, in 1999 he filmed the video Schneider marries his SONYA , a union with his TV life, whose 50th anniversary he celebrated in 1998. There are always exhibitions with his photographs, in Berlin he develops his photographic series Baulin , a series of photos of footpaths and renovation work on houses in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg , RGB is also created in this series.
