Joan Logue (* 1942 in McKeesport , Pennsylvania ) is an American pioneer of video art .

life and work

Logue was born in McKeesport in 1942 and grew up in Southern California . She started making videos shortly after the first Portapak video cameras hit the American market. In 1970 she graduated from Mount St. Mary's University (Los Angeles) with a master's degree in painting and photography. She worked with the American Film Institute , taught at the California Institute of the Arts from 1972 to 1974 and at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles in 1977 . Then Joan Logue moved to New York City . Joan Logue was visiting professor at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Nancy (1991), Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg (1992), the École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux (1993) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1996) .

Since 1971, Joan Logue has recorded hundreds of portraits on video, which she presented as video installations “video portrait galleries”. In 1979, Logue began taking a second type of portrait called “30 Second Portraits”, also known as “ Commercials for Artists”. Her best-known videos are those of artists , writers , poets , philosophers and composers . Those portrayed include: Nam June Paik , Jasper Johns , David Hockney , Willem de Kooning , Laurie Anderson , Robert Rauschenberg , Meredith Monk , Roy Lichtenstein , Ellsworth Kelly , John Cage , Richard Diebenkorn , Joan Mitchell , Spalding Gray , Vija Celmins , Judy Chicago , Anna Halprin , Lucinda Childs , Julia Kristeva , Jacques Derrida , Maryanne Amacher , Steve Reich , Pierre Boulez , Rosa Parks , and César Chávez , to name a few.
