Life

Julia Kristeva was able to leave Bulgaria thanks to a doctoral scholarship and has lived and worked in Paris since 1965 . There she has held a chair at the University of Paris VII (Denis Diderot) since 1973 .

Her writings on linguistics and language shaped the post-structuralist discussion, especially through her collaboration on the literary-critical journal Tel Quel . She was influenced thereby u. a. of Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis , the Russian formalism (she played a mediating role and made Mikhail Bachtin known in the French intellectual scene), her friendship with Roland Barthes and the intensive examination of his work and Hegelianism .

In addition to her research, Kristeva has published several novels . She is considered a committed European.

In the early 1970s Kristeva explored "female identity in patriarchy ". Kristeva has been criticized by sections of feminist literary scholars for her proximity to psychoanalysis . More recently, her work has influenced theories of gender studies . She has been married to the writer Philippe Sollers since 1967 .

In March 2018, allegations were raised that Kristeva was recruited for the Bulgarian foreign secret service in 1971 and that she was given the code name "Sabina". However, the authenticity of the allegations is questionable; Kristeva herself denies having worked for the secret service.
