The Directors Lounge (abbreviation: "DL") is an ongoing Berlin film and media art platform with year-round screenings and exhibitions in Berlin and various other cities. Annually parallel to the Berlin International Film Festival (February), the central event of the Directors Lounge, the intensified presentation "The Berlin International Directors Lounge" takes place. Directors Lounge was brought to life by the filmmaker André Werner , the artist Joachim Seinfeld and the gallery owner / curator Longest F. Stein in conjunction with the A&O gallery and other artists from the Berlin media art scene.

founding

The Directors Lounge was founded informally in 2005 to offer filmmakers and video artists an informal environment as a meeting point during the Berlinale , as well as an opportunity to show films that did not correspond to any standardized categorization in terms of length, method or subject, whether by well-known or obscure artists . In contrast to most such film festivals, the environment should be free of the “black box atmosphere” of ordinary cinemas and projection rooms, but rather encourage interaction and conversation. As such, their goal was to serve as a launch pad for collaborations. Due to the positive response, the event was expanded beyond the annual festival and developed into a permanent platform for film and media art, with the Berlin International Directors Lounge (i.e. the annual event in February, see section below) remaining as the central event. The festival has so far taken place in different locations, with particular attention to ensure that it remains a non-standardized multimedia experience.

Berlin International Directors Lounge

The publicly attended annual event, which takes place in February parallel to the Berlin Film Festival, is primarily a film forum with short films as a focus, but it also organizes installations and live music acts and action art . Many films are shown as world premieres. The artistic direction of the last event (stylized as "[DLX]", February 6-16, 2014) was credited to Julia Murakami, André Werner, Klaus W. Eisenlohr and Kenton Turk. Among the frequent curator contributors are the filmmakers Alexei Dmitriev ( Russia ) and Shaun Wilson ( Australia ) as well as Heiko Daxl ( Germany ), who died in 2012, together with Ingeborg Fülepp ( Croatia ), both media artists.

The first festival (2005) took place in the Club el Cultrún in Berlin-Friedrichshain . In 2006 and 2007, redesigned rooms in Karl-Marx-Allee (137 and 133, respectively) served as the event location. 2008 and 2009 drew Directors Lounge by middle in the now defunct Scala (1908 opened as Überbrettl later Aladin, later Camera, "the only cinema in the GDR " called), and 2010 and 2011, the Arts and the studio house served Meinblau on the Pfefferberg in Prenzlauer Berg as an event location. With the eighth festival she moved back to Mitte, to the local recreation area Sternchen, behind the former GDR premiere cinema Kino International near Alexanderplatz .

As the name suggests, the film festival focuses on creating an informal and ambient atmosphere where filmmakers and cineastes have the opportunity to easily get in touch with each other, unlike many similar companies. It is open to all submissions, regardless of length. In addition to selected films from this open call, it consists of a number of specially curated programs.

The festival does not give awards to participating films, which further sets it apart from similar exhibitions. It is a non-profit event that is largely supported by volunteer services and some sponsorship. Performers and guest speakers are not paid to attend.

Notable recent entrants to the festival include Golden Globe and BAFTA award winner Michael Nyman , who attended the first public screening in Germany of his feature film NYman With A Movie Camera (2011); the Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin , who delivered a selection of his short films the same year he served as a Berlinale jury member (2011); the three-time Cannes Film Festival award-winner photographer / filmmaker Anton Corbijn (2012); Winner of the Sundance Prize of the International Jury for Short Films Simon Ellis , who was present at a self-curated retrospective of his films (2012) and the filmmaker and co-founder of the term " Cinema of Transgression " Nick Zedd , who was also present at a retrospective of his short films ( 2012). Notable recent premieres include the first public screening of works by Turkish digital media artist Erdal Inci in Germany (2014).

Among the artists were the Czech composer of avant-garde music Vladimír Hirsch (who performed his "Underlying Scapes") and Birol Ünel , winner of the German Film Prize for Best Leading Actor (the poems by NO! Art anti-art movement member Miron Zownir read out). Steve Morell , founder of the record label Pale Music International , has performed as a DJ several times .

Year-round media art platform

Soon, the February festival grew into an enterprise that included presentations throughout the year. There have been a number of Directors Lounge events and collaborations outside of Germany, including in London (Cog Collective, 2006), Posen (IF Museum, 2006), Denver (TIE [The International Experimental Cinema Exhibition], 2006), St Petersburg (in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut , 2008), Paris (Nuit Blanche, 2011), Los Angeles (with the Los Angeles Art Association , 2011), Timișoara (Timishort Film Festival, 2011), Miami ( Art Basel Miami Beach , 2011), Albuquerque (Experiments in Cinema, 2012), Rome (L'Isola del Cinema, Cinelab Groupama, 2012), Seoul (Zaha Museum, 2012; Gallery On, 2014) Vienna ( MuseumsQuartier , 2014). Porto Alegre (Usina do Gasômetro, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, 2015) and Salvador (in collaboration with Ocupação Coaty, 2016). Similar domestic events outside Berlin took place in Munich (Remembrance in Movement, 2007), Cologne (Tease Art Fair, 2009), Essen (CAR, 2011), Düsseldorf ( Japan Day , Blackbox Cinema in the Filmmuseum , 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and Dresden (engine hall, 2015). The presentations often reflect the multimedia perspective of the February event. During these excursions, a. VJ Chuuu ( Japan ) and the Kraftwerk founding member Eberhard Kranemann .

In addition to these trips abroad, there are regular presentations in Berlin itself. Significant among these are ongoing monthly lectures by Klaus W. Eisenlohr. Discussions with the filmmakers and the audience after the screenings are characteristic of these screenings. Most of them take place in the “Z-inema” of the Z-Bar, which presents numerous and varied cultural events. Eisenlohr also curates a special ongoing series of screenings called "Urban Research" that is regularly presented as part of the February festival.

The focus of the Directors Lounge events remains largely contemporary experimental film as well as an innovative new conceptualization of the manner of the screenings. In 2015 the platform presented “DL à la carte” for the first time, a concept for a localized, but nonetheless asynchronous selection presentation of the film festival in cooperation with shoutr labs (Berlin). It was the first such company of its kind for them (Berlin List Fair for Contemporary Art, September 2015).

Despite the parallel timeframe of the event taking place in February, the Directors Lounge is in no way connected with the Berlin International Film Festival; Nor is it to be confused with the later founded German organization with the name Regielounge, whose name appears differently in the English translation as "Director's Lounge" or "Directors Lounge".
