Susanne Kutter (* 1971 in Wernigerode ) is a German video, object and installation artist .

life and work

Kutter studied at the Münster Art Academy from 1992 to 1999 . In her objects, videos and installations she breaks through the linear plot at the moment of viewing with a sudden change. “The given order is broken up by the artist's creative intervention. The moment of sudden change initiates an open end and chance takes the position of the designer ”.

In her video Moving Day , 2001, DVD, 28 min., She furnished a bourgeois living room in a construction container with an armchair, TV, sideboard and checkered curtains. The video shows how the furniture - like a nightmare - begins to move independently while being transported on a truck. Cupboard doors open, glass splinters. The artist shows "the change of an intact, security suggesting interior into a chaotic, coincidental condition in which the physics seems to get out of control and completely destroyed the former living space".

In her video: Flooded Home , 2003, 65 min., She set up a home-style living room, which she then slowly flooded with water. “As the water level rises, the furnishings gradually lose their grip and float on the surface for a while. As soon as the room is full, the viewer is offered a weightless underwater sequence, with some of the furniture drifting sedately through the picture ”. The artist used an empty swimming pool for the video recording .

For the installation Outside the curfew in 2006, visitors entered a gallery room on the opening evening in which there was a closed kitchen buffet. All the doors suddenly burst open in front of the audience, and the cupboard turned out to be a lighted cocktail bar, completely equipped with drinks bottles and glasses. The artist had provided the doors with small explosive devices connected by fuses, which she triggered centrally.

Kutter lives and works in Berlin .
