Peter Kees (born December 19, 1965 in Bayreuth ) is a German conceptual artist .

Life

After finishing school in Bayreuth, Kees first studied humanities and worked as a theater director before devoting himself exclusively to the fine arts. Today the artist lives and works in Bavaria and Berlin. He often caused a stir with socially critical projects (including ICH AG, Company Future - Life without Money, 100% SECURE, We make more out of your money ). In his long-term project TV REAL - first public replacement television , he publicly interviews people from all walks of life and tries to find out about individual attitudes and experiences. In 2006 he founded the Arcadian Embassy and has been its ambassador ever since. In addition to the Berlin headquarters, he also founds international consulates. Since 2013 it has been occupying individual square meters of land across Europe and declaring these occupied areas to be Arcadian territory.

Works (selection)

Intervention ICH AG made him known nationwide in 2002. Kees took the term literally and billed his lifetime, for example through an invoice for lived lifetime addressed to the federal government.

He had already attracted attention in the media with the art shooting range: SCHIESSMICH (2002) project . Kees urged people to shoot their own picture.

Since 2002 he has been carrying out his TV REAL interview project in different locations , including the Kunsthaus Bregenz , the taz and the DNA gallery in Berlin.

He caused a stir again in 2004 with the work UNTERNEHMEN ZUKUNFT - Leben ohne Geld , in which he offered public survival training.

The Goethe Institute invited him to Eastern European capitals in 2004 with the Identity Checkpoint project . Kees asked passers-by to give their personal and social identity and donate DNA-compatible material. The results of this examination of identity could be seen in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.

In 2005 he blew up luggage in the intervention 100% SAFE. The detonated remains and a video of the demolitions were shown in various exhibitions, including in La Cappella Barcelona, ​​the Museum for Contemporary Art Skopje and in the NGBK Berlin .

He presented the Arcadian Embassy for the first time at the 2006 Havana Biennale . There Kees distributed Arcadian VISA and ASYL. The Berlin embassy in Arcadia is located in the Berlin gallery artMbassy. There are consulates at the ACC Weimar and the PAN Naples, among others.

Together with his colleagues Uwe Jonas and Hans Winkler, Kees destroyed banknotes with acid in 2007 and showed the money transformed into art in the exhibition We make more of your money in Berlin.

In 2008, in his work “... or the art of simply being”, Kees declared the Kollwitz bakery in Berlin a work of art.

On June 14, 2013, he occupied one square meter of land on Finnish territory and declared it Arcadian territory. Foreign authorities are no longer allowed to prosecute people here. The Finnish government has been informed of this and is requested to make appropriate entries in the land register.

On August 30, 2013, he also occupied a square meter of land at Walchensee in Bavaria and declared it to be Arcadian territory.

On October 14, 2013, Kees occupied one square meter of land on the Aecherli Pass in Switzerland and declared it Arcadian territory. This triggers a wave of discussions in and about the Swiss media.

Since then he has located more Arcadian square meters in Poland, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Greece and France.

In 2016 he published the documentary fatherlandscapes , in which he made his own story of being excluded and of the struggle for one's own child the topic. Kees took over the direction, camera and sound as well as the editing himself. The film was shown in selected cinemas across Germany.

On July 22nd, 2016 he tried to hand over the materials for one arcadian square meter to the Turkish government via the Turkish Consulate General in Munich.

On April 9, 2017, he declared a district court director to be a work of art because he censored a work of art and thus interfered with the freedom of art.
