Ocean County is a county in the state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 510,916 people and a population density of 310 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Toms River .

geography

The second largest county in the state has an area of ​​2372 square kilometers, of which 724 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monmouth County , Atlantic County and Burlington County and is directly on the Atlantic Ocean.

history

The county was created in 1850 by a division of Monmouth County. Initially, the main focus of employment in this rural area was agriculture and fishing. Tourism later became one of the pillars of the economy.

In the early 1950s, suburbs of the large cities of New Jersey and New York also formed in this county . This was facilitated by road construction projects such as the construction of the Garden State Parkway . This resulted in this county remaining the fastest growing in the state for decades. As a result, the population grew from 37,675 in 1940 to 510,916 in 2000.

Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Georgian Court and Hangar No. 1, Lakehurst Naval Air Station . 32 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

The county had 510,916 people as of the 2000 census . There were 200,402 households and 137,876 families. The population density was 310 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.05% White, 2.99% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 1.24% other races Groups; 1.29% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.02% of the population.

Of the 200,402 households, 28.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.40% were married couples living together, 9.20% were single mothers. 31.20% were not families. 27.00% were single households and 16.50% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.30% residents under 18 years of age, 6.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 22.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 90.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 86.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,443 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,420. Males had a median income of $ 44,822 versus $ 30,717 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,054. 7.00% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. 10.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 5.60% were 65 years of age or older.
