Location of the Venetia mine in South Africa

The Venetia Diamond Mine , english Venetia diamond mine , one of the last in South Africa went into operation in mines for diamond mining and at the same time with an annual output of about 4 million carats (800 kg; 40% corresponds to the South African annual production ) the most productive in the country.

geography

location

The Venetia diamond mine is located 80 kilometers west of Musina in the Limpopo province . The planned Krone-Endora diamond mine is in the immediate vicinity .

geology

The Venetia group consists of eleven Kimberlite - chimneys and a kimberlite transition square kilometers with an extension of approximately 3 minutes. Since the chimneys were created by multiple intrusions, they consist of different types of kimberlite. The total surface of the kimberlite deposit is 28 hectares .

history

The first diamond-containing gravel was found in 1903 about 35 km northeast of the current mine near the Limpopo River . In 1969 De Beers began researching the origin of gravel. In 1980 the chimneys that were worthwhile for mining were discovered, the alignment of the opencast mine began in 1990, production in 1992. In 1993, full production was achieved.

business

The upper parts of the K1 and K2 deposits are currently being mined using opencast mines . The open pit mine is planned to run until 2021, and civil engineering will begin in 2021 . Civil engineering is expected to achieve an annual output of 5.9 million tons in 2024 and be in operation by around 2043. Total production is planned with 94 million carats (18.8 tons) of diamonds, for which a raw extraction of 130 million tons must be provided. The groundbreaking for the project took place in 2013 in the presence of President Jacob Zuma . The general manager of the mine is Johnny Velloza.

The civil engineering is developed through a spiral with a depth of 900 m and two shafts with a depth of over 1000 m. The sole conveyance will be carried out trackless with automatic, driverless dump trucks.

The mine is operated by De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM). Aligning the open pit cost the equivalent of US $ 400 million and aligning the civil engineering US $ 2 billion, with part of the work being awarded to Murray & Roberts , who will sink the shafts and the spiral, for US $ 180 million the soles , the ventilation and the drainage will align.

The mine currently employs 3000 people, most of whom come from the local province. The orientation and operation of civil engineering employ around 1,500 people, and a further 5,100 will employ the associated value chain. The operation is expected to generate 19.9 billion US dollars annually for the South African economy between 2012 and 2043, of which 7.8 billion will be generated directly.

social commitment

As a social commitment and to create local jobs, DBCM wants to put the long-shut down aquaculture for the production of spirulina back into operation in Musina .
