Mary Chieffo (* 1992 in Valley Glen , Los Angeles ) is an American actress . Since 2017 she has played the role of L'Rell, Chancellor of the Klingon Empire, in the CBS series   Star Trek: Discovery .

Life

Mary Chieffo is the daughter of actress couple Beth Grant and Michael Chieffo and grew up in Valley Village , Los Angeles. She studied at the Juilliard Drama School in New York City , graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and an award for "Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Drama". Even in drama school, she played several roles in Shakespeare productions; She made her theatrical debut shortly afterwards in the role of Iago in a purely female and ethnically diverse production of Shakespeare's Othello at the Harlem Shakespeare Festival in New York . She also played a number of roles in independent productions and the short film The Perfect Fit , directed by Beth Grant, which won the audience award for the best short film at the Soho International Film Festival .

After graduating Chieffo belonged together with other seventeen Juilliard -Absolventinnen and graduates, including Discovery team member Mary Wiseman , the group G44 Productions, realized the number of smaller projects.

Since 2017 she has played the role of L'Rell, Chancellor of the Klingon Empire in Star Trek: Discovery - a character who gains a lot in profile in the second season and has to make great personal sacrifices in order to keep her empire together as the "mother of the Klingons" .
