Wiesław Błach

Wiesław Piotr Błach (born March 25, 1962 in Opole ) is a former Polish judoka and European champion who remained connected to the sport of judo after his active career as a trainer and as a functionary.

Athletic career

The 1.71 m tall Wiesław Błach was active in the lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms. From 1982 to 1992 he was Polish champion eight times, once second and twice third. In 1990 he also took second place in the open class behind Jacek Beutler who was eight inches taller and over twenty kilograms heavier .

Błach's international career began with seventh place at the European Championships in 1982. In the same year he took second place at the World Student Championships. He missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott . In the alternative competitions held in Warsaw, he took third place. At the 1985 World Championships, he was defeated in the semifinals by Mike Swain from the United States, but won a bronze medal. Błach also won bronze at the 1986 European Championships in Belgrade. After a quarter-final defeat against the Italian Ezio Gamba , he fought his way to the bronze medal with two wins in the hope round, which he won against the German Steffen Stranz . Wiesław Błach also received a bronze medal at the Goodwill Games in 1986. In 1987 he defeated Steffen Stranz in the semifinals at the European Championships in Paris, and in the final he defeated the French Richard Melillo . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he was eliminated in his second fight against the Brazilian Luis Onmura .

At the European Championships in 1990 in Frankfurt am Main, Błach lost to the Finn Jorma Korhonen in the round of 16 , but fought his way to the bronze medal with three wins in the round of hope. In 1992 he finished fifth at the European Championships in Paris. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he defeated the Cuban Igancio Sayu and the North Korean Park Yong-i through Ippon. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by the later Olympic champion Toshihiko Koga after 3:05 minutes. In the hope round he defeated the Chinese Shi Chengsheng and then lost to the French Bruno Carabetta . Ultimately, Wiesław Błach took seventh place.

After his active career, Błach coached the light heavyweight Paweł Nastula and led him to Olympic victory in Atlanta in 1996 . Błach later became President of the Polish Judo Association and Technical Director of the European Judo Union .
