Wilson Cruz (born December 27, 1973 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American actor .

Life

Wilson Cruz grew up as the son of Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, New York. When he came out as homosexual in his family at the age of 18, his father did not accept his sexual orientation and Cruz was forced to leave home. Cruz lived in a car for some time and eventually applied to be an actor in Hollywood. In 1995 he got the role of gay teenager Ricky Vasquez in the television series Welcome to Life . Welcome to Life was the first series with an openly gay youth. Cruz spoke to screenwriter Winnie Holzman about his experiences as a gay teenager, so many of his experiences are reflected in the series. Rickie also had to leave the house because of his homosexuality. Wilson Cruz later stated that Rickie was a kind of alter ego for him. Through “Welcome to Life” the reconciliation between Wilson Cruz and his father was achieved. He saw the series and realized that the role of Rickie coincided with the character of his son, whereupon he apologized to Cruz by phone. Wilson Cruz described the character of Rickie as one of his most important roles. He also received many letters from teenagers who identified with the role of Rickie and whom his portrayal helped. From 1997 Wilson Cruz also appeared in various Broadway musicals. In 1997, for example, he was seen in the musical Rent . From 2007 to 2009 he played Evan Martinez in the television series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World . In the fall of 2014, Cruz starred in the drama Red Band Society .

In the 2017 book adaptation Dead Girls Don't Lie (13 Reasons Why) , published on Netflix , Cruz plays the Baker family lawyer, Dennis Vasquez. In the Star Trek: Discovery series, which started in September 2017 , Cruz and Anthony Rapp form the first homosexual couple in the history of the franchise.
