Journalist Katherine Johnson collects information about the Mafia. In a huge article she wants to expose the criminal machinations. To get inside information, she enters into a liaison with Jack Fox, the Don's nephew. But Fox is careful. He lets her spy on and thus gets behind her intentions. Then he gives his people the order to murder Katherine.

Blake Johnson, a secret agent on the personal orders of the President of the United States, still cares a lot for his divorced wife. One day when her body is pulled out of the river, he is furious. He quickly finds out the connection to the Mafia. From now on he plans his own personal revenge. He is assisted by his friend and colleague Sean Dillon, who came from London. Together, the two agents fight the aspirations of Jack Fox, who wants to get to the top of the mafia.

Johnson and Dillon sabotage multiple sources that Fox draws money from, and suddenly the Mafia boss realizes he's almost penniless. He sees only a tiny chance to turn things around: He kidnaps Blake Johnson and tortures him. Johnson is said to serve as bait for Sean Dillon, whom Fox wants to lure to his country estate in Hellsmouth and render harmless there.

Sean Dillon takes on Fox and his last loyal followers and frees Blake Johnson.

Features of the novel

The novel glorifies violence. Cruel things are described in short, concise sentences, e.g. B. how one figure shoots another's kneecap. Characters are rated based on how many people they have killed - the more, the better the person is. Two female characters are praised for killing people. When Hannah Bernstein expresses doubts about the legality of the (illegal) actions by Dillon and Johnson, Brigadier Ferguson sends her on vacation without further ado.
