Concertino (Shostakovich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Concertino op. 94 for two pianos (1953) for four hands is a one-movement piece by the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975). In the Concertino (Italian: small concert) the first piano emerges as a soloist, while the second takes on the role of an accompanying orchestra. The Concertino is in A minor, it consists of a short Adagio introduction and an Allegretto part immediately following with Adagio insertions. The catchy melody points to the neo-romantic late style of the composer. The work has been recorded many times, including by Shostakovich together with his son Maxim . The work was premiered on January 20, 1954 at the Moscow Conservatory with Maxim Shostakovich and Alla Maloletkowa.
