Eduard Franck

Eduard Franck (born October 5, 1817 in Breslau , † December 1, 1893 in Berlin ) was a German composer .

Life

Eduard Franck spent his youth in Breslau. Between 1834 and 1838 he was a private student of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Düsseldorf and Leipzig, where he also befriended Robert Schumann and William Sterndale Bennett . After stays abroad in Paris, London and Rome, he lived in Berlin from 1845 to 1851. From 1851 to 1859 Franck taught the subjects of piano, score playing and music theory at the Conservatory ( Rheinische Musikschule ) in Cologne, which was directed by Ferdinand Hiller . In addition, Franck was the director of the municipal choir as well as composer and pianist at the Gürzenich Concerts. In 1856 he received the title of Royal Music Director. From 1859 to 1867 Eduard Franck was the head of the music school in Bern and the conductor of the Bern Music Society and thus the person who determined the city's musical life. In 1867 he became a teacher at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, and in 1878 at Emil Breslaur's seminar in Berlin. In 1875 he was awarded the title of professor.

In his first works, Eduard Franck was initially committed to the model of Mendelssohn (cf. the Violin Concerto Op. 30 in E minor, performed in Cologne in 1855/1861, for which Ferdinand David had given technical advice and which may also have inspired Max Bruch ). Later compositions are characterized by independence and individual language. Today one sees him correctly not as a successor, but as an intermediary between the generations of the main masters ( Friedhelm Krummacher ). Characteristic are formal clarity and noble expression as a result of a combination of transparent sentence and classically oriented structure with a romantic idiom. Important are the two symphonies op.47 in A major and op.52 in B major, the second violin concerto op.57 in D major, the string quartets op.49, 54 and 55, two string sextets op.41 and 50, but also the sometimes surprisingly modern violin sonatas and the extensive piano works (especially numerous sonatas), which he summarized in large cycles.

Eduard Franck married the pianist Tony Cäcilie Thiedemann on July 20, 1850 in Berlin. On January 3, 1858, she gave birth to her son Richard Franck in Cologne , who, as a pupil of Carl Reinecke, continued the family's musical tradition as a composer and pianist. The daughters Elsa (August 6, 1860) and Ida (April 27, 1862) were born in Bern. Eduard Franck is the brother of the writer Hermann Franck .

Eduard Franck's works have been re-edited by Pfefferkorn Musikverlag (Leipzig) since 2010 . Previously unpublished works will be presented in the first print.
