Wolf-Dietrich Uwe Wesel (born February 2, 1933 in Hamburg ) is a German lawyer emeritus and legal historian from the Free University of Berlin .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hamburg, Wesel studied classical philology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , before switching to law . From 1961 to 1968 he was a research assistant at the Munich law faculty, then assistant to Wolfgang Kunkel . In 1965, with a thesis on Roman law at Saarland University, he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD . He completed his habilitation in 1968 with a thesis on Roman law and civil law .

In 1968 he became a full professor of civil law and legal history at the Free University of Berlin called . At the age of 36, Wesel was elected Vice President of the Free University of Berlin in 1969. He held this office until 1973. In March 2001 he retired . Wesel was admitted to the Berlin bar in May 2006.

He is a member of the PEN Center Germany and a regular contributor to ZEIT , Critical Justice and the course book .

Act

His main academic field of work is in the field of legal history . However, he also writes popular legal books. Some of them are standard works, for example the history of law: From the early forms to the present . He is known beyond the specialist boundaries. His book “Almost everything that is right” is one of the few bestsellers in this genre.

For the publishing house CH Beck in 2013 he edited half of the publishing history for its 250th anniversary. His portrayal of the publishing house under National Socialism under the direction of Heinrich Beck met with some opposition. Wesel presented the Aryanization of Otto Liebmann's publishing house in 1933 as a business process in which the purchase price paid corresponded to the actual value of the Liebmann publishing house at the time. The appointment of Carl Schmitt as publisher of the Deutsche Juristen-Zeitung , Heinrich Beck's accession to the NSDAP and the publication of legal commentaries on explicit Nazi laws presented Wesel as owed to the "circumstances of the time".

politics

Wesel, who had been a member of the SPD since 1959 , was expelled from the party in 1974. The party executive justified this step with the fact that Wesel had given "tactical advice to communists" to the Communist Students' Association at the Free University of Berlin on the role of individual terror in the labor movement, which was printed in the socialist Berlin Extra-Dienst . According to Wesel’s statement, however, he intended and achieved with this speech that the KSV recognized the pointlessness of its attacks and harassment against FU professors and the riots ended the next day.

Since September 1st, 2008 Wesel is again a member of the SPD (Grunewald department).

1978/79 Wesel was a member of the jury of the third Russell Tribunal .
