Carles & Sofia Piano Duo is the name of the piano duo that consists of the pianists Carles (Carlos) Lama (born February 26, 1970 in Girona , Catalonia , Spain ) and Sofia Cabruja (born May 11, 1965 in Girona, Catalonia, Spain) . Carles and Sofia have been playing piano recitals for four hands and concerts for two pianos and orchestra since 1987 . Her concert activity extends to Europe , America and Asia .

biography

Carles Lama and Sofia Cabruja began studying music in their hometown of Girona and graduated from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona . In 1992 they received a scholarship to continue their education abroad, went to the École Normale de Musique de Paris and later to the Hartt School (University of Hartford, Connecticut). They received further scholarships during their university days in the USA. The two teachers who said they had the greatest influence on the duo were the Russian pianist Nina Svetlanova and the Brazilian pianist Luiz de Moura Castro.

Concert activity

Carles and Sofia made their first public appearance as a duo in 1987. Their concert activity extends to Europe, America and Asia.

Among others, Carles and Sofia played a program with Maurice Ravel's La Valse in Carnegie Hall (New York City) in February 2011 , and in March 2007 they performed a recital in the Jin Mao Tower (Shanghai), the works of the Spanish composers Albéniz and De Falla included and presented an Ibero-American program of compositions by Guastavino , Aceves and Basomba at the Teatro Solís of (Montevideo, Uruguay).

Carles and Sofia have played concerts for two pianos or piano four hands and orchestra with various international orchestras :

In 2004 they performed the Concerto for Two Pianos BWV 1060 by Johann Sebastian Bach together with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia in the Yayasan Seni Berdaftar in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2007 they gave the world premiere of Thomas McIntosh's Concerto for piano four hands with the London City Chamber Orchestra and in 2011 they played Poulenc's Concerto in D minor for two pianos and orchestra with the State Hermitage Orchestra at Tzar's Village Music Festival.

In 2012, Carles and Sofia were invited to the Bach Marathon in the International Music House in Moscow to interpret Bach's Concerto for three pianos and orchestra in D major BWV 1063 and the Concerto for four pianos and orchestra in A minor BWV 1065 .

In 2013 they took part in the series of performances of Beethoven's symphonies in chamber arrangements at the Fundación Juan March (Madrid). There they played arrangements for piano four hands of the composer's third and fourth symphonies.

repertoire

The repertoire of the piano duo ranges from Bach to music of the 21st century and includes major works for piano four hands as well as transcriptions of orchestral works with a focus on French, Russian and German music. In almost all concerts they play Spanish music, including Albéniz and De Falla . Carles and Sofia have close relationships with contemporary composers such as John Carmichael and Daniel Basomba. Both composers began writing for the duo after seeing it in concert.

Carles and Sofia combine concerts and lectures, give master classes and give lectures in different countries in Europe, America and Asia.

Selection:

In 2001 Carles and Sofia gave a lecture on Spanish music at Steinway Hall in Tokyo.

In 2005, Carles and Sofia held a workshop on music & literature in Kuala Lumpur in connection with the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Cervantes' Don Quixote .

In 2009, Carles and Sofia gave master classes in Singapore at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and at NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts).

In April 2013 they gave a master class at the University of Texas at Arlington . In June 2013, Carles Lama held a master class in Italy on “Technology in the service of art”.

  • Liederkreis Series, song concert cycle in Girona with translation of all poems into Catalan (2003 to 2010).

Honourings and prices

Carles and Sofia receive a UNICEF award from Margarita de Borbón

In 2001, Carles and Sofia received an award from UNICEF for their humanitarian commitment from Her Royal Highness Margarita de Borbón in Madrid .

In the year of their 25th stage anniversary in 2012, Carles and Sofia joined the circle of Steinway Artists , which also includes legendary pianists such as Arthur Rubinstein , Sergei Rachmaninov and Alicia de Larrocha .

Social commitment and mentorship

In 2010 Carles and Sofia founded Concerts4Good: Music on a Mission, a project of international solidarity concerts that take place in different cities and countries. The first edition of Concerts4Good premiered in January 2013 in Porto (Portugal). Carles and Sofia also act as mentors for young, talented musicians.
