Mulo Francel (born September 21, 1967 in Munich ) is a German saxophonist and (film) composer who works in the border area between jazz , classical and world music . Kulturnews magazine attributed it to "currently the most sensual saxophone sound in Europe".

Live and act

Francel grew up on the Chiemsee . In his early youth he took records from his father's jazz collection to his child's room and played the guitar to this music. At the age of 16 he bought a saxophone, which he learned as an autodidact . He first studied linguistics , but dropped out to become a musician. With Lisa Wahlandt he founded the group Mind Games , which recorded their debut album with Claudio Roditi ; with the second album Mind Games Plays the Music of Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto the group reached number 1 on the jazz charts in Singapore.

At the same time, he has played in the Quadro Nuevo quartet since 1996 , which was very successful with its recordings and has received the German Jazz Award and the European Impala Prize several times . Quadro Nuevo also produced audio books under Francel’s leadership . He has also toured internationally with formations such as Tango Lyrico , Mulo Francel & Friends or the Trio Blasirello .

In addition, Francel has also released several albums under his own name, most recently (2014) the album The Sax & the Sea , in which he was recorded directly on the water without any further accompaniment. As a soloist he also played with the Munich Radio Orchestra , the NDR Orchestra, the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg , the Echoes of Swing and the contemporary Ensemble Resonanz . In addition, he wrote numerous compositions, including for film.

Prizes and awards

Francel received the culture award of the city of Rosenheim. With Quadro Nuevo , he was awarded the Echo Jazz twice. In addition, he and Evelyn Huber twice received the German Jazz Award of the German music industry in gold for the albums Tango Lyrico and Songs of Spices due to the good sales .
