Career

Donner studied at the Sibelius Academy with Joonas Kokkonen and Nils-Eric Fougstedt . In the early 1960s he was a student of György Ligeti in Vienna . He studied electronic music with Gottfried Michael Koenig and at the Siemens studio for electronic music in Munich.

Donner is considered to be one of the most determined representatives of avant-garde and experimental music in Finland. In the 1960s he made a name for himself with a number of musical happenings : the Street Piece Helsinki (a street happening , 1963), the Pasila Piece (a television happening, 1963) and Studio Sleeper (a radio happening, 1963). In the piece Ideogramme I (1962) he combined twelve radios with an instrumental ensemble of flute, clarinet, trombone and drums. Ideograms II is a composition for tape and instruments. In his Six Bagatelles for String Quartet , the musicians' actions between the pieces become part of the composition. His string quartet from 1970 ends with an aphorism by Lenin , performed by a baritone.

In addition, Donner worked as a jazz trumpeter and composer. He led the group Free for All , played with Juhani Aaltonen and arranged for MA Numminen . In the field of jazz he was involved in 17 recording sessions from 1965 to 2012.
