Adam Bałdych (born May 18, 1986 in Gorzów Wielkopolski ) is a Polish jazz violinist . According to Ulrich Olshausen , he is “undoubtedly the greatest living violin technician in jazz . You can expect everything from him. "

Live and act

Bałdych attended music school from the age of nine and was soon considered a child prodigy on the violin . When he was thirteen, he decided to go to jazz. At the age of 16 he began an international career and was soon playing in Europe and Asia. After graduating with honors from the Katowice Academy of Music , he received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He leads his own band Damage Control and works for theater and film productions. Together with Leszek Możdżer, he developed the soundtrack for the film Sir Arnes Schatz by Mauritz Stiller . He played at numerous festivals such as the Leipzig Jazz Days , the JazzFest Berlin , the London Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival and also performed with the NDR Big Band . In addition to his fellow violinists Didier Lockwood , Jerry Goodman , Krzesimir Dębski , Mark Feldman , Mateusz Smoczyński , Maciej Strzelczyk, Pierre Blanchard and Christian Howes, he took part in the 2009 “Tribute to Zbigniew Seifert ” conducted by guitarist Jarosław Śmietana . He is also involved in albums by Piotr Żaczek, Iiro Rantala ( My History of Jazz , Anyone with a Heart ), Mika Urbaniak and Anna Szarmach.

His album Imaginary Room was recorded with a Scandinavian all-star band in early March 2012 in Berlin's Hansa studio and produced by Siggi Loch and Nils Landgren . He released his second album for ACT, The New Tradition , as a duo with pianist Yaron Herman in 2014. He can also be heard on the album Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic IV - Accordion Night (in a duo with Stian Carstensen ). With Asja Valčić he has been part of Iiro Rantala's String Trio since 2014 . In 2015 his first album was released with Helge Lien and his trio, followed by another in 2017. He also toured in a trio with Vincent Courtois and Rogier Telderman .

Bałdych is married to the singer Kari Sál , with whom he also performs; together they organized during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland , the campaign #gramywdomu with live streaming concerts, to improve the situation of artists.

Prizes and awards

Since 2001, Bałdych has been honored annually with the Key for Career Award from the Polish trade journal “ Jazz Forum ”. In 2002 he won first prize at the Jazz Celebration competition in Gorzów; In 2006 he received the Grand Prix at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival . For his album Imaginary Room he was awarded an ECHO Jazz as international instrumentalist of the year in 2013 ; In 2015, the renowned Polish Grand Prix Jazz Melomani followed for the same album . In 2014, the readers of the Polish Jazz Forum voted Bałdych “Violinist of the Year”. He was also nominated twice for a Fryderyk . In 2016 he received the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani music award as "Album of the Year" for his duo album The New Tradition .

In 2016, Bałdych was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland in recognition of special achievements for his home country; the Polish Minister of Culture also awarded him the Order of Merit for Polish Culture .
