David Richard "Dave" Connor (born October 27, 1945 in Wythenshawe ) is a former English football player . As a versatile defender and midfielder , he won the English championship with Manchester City in 1968 , but despite having been with the club for almost ten years, he could never recommend himself as a permanent player.
Athletic career
Born in Wythenshawe near Manchester in 1945 , Connor was a left winger on the successful Manchester City youth team in the early 1960s. In this position, the "left foot" made his debut at the beginning of the 1964/65 season against Charlton Athletic (1: 2) also in the professional team, which was active at the time in the second division Second Division . In this season Connor came to a total of 24 league appearances, whereby he dodged more on the right wing towards the end. He scored three goals, including a hit to a 4-3 win against his future employer Preston North End . When for the following season 1965/66 with Joe Mercer and his assistant Malcolm Allison a new coaching team came to the "Citizens", Connor initially continued to be a fixture in the team, but increasingly took on the role of a substitute player who took up various vacant positions would have. As a result, he never recommended himself as a regular player and after his promotion in 1966 his athletic perspective gradually deteriorated.
When Manchester City won the English championship in 1968 , Connor contributed thirteen league appearances and one goal to the success. He took on more and more defensive tasks and acted in this regard as a pure "man decker". In this role, he was particularly positive in the 1969 FA Cup semi-final against Everton , in which he neutralized Alan Ball and helped move into the final with a 1-0 - there he sat in the 1-0 win against Leicester City only on the bench. Nor was he represented in the two subsequent final successes in 1970 in the European Cup Winners' Cup (2-1 against Górnik Zabrze and League Cup (2-1 against West Bromwich Albion ) and after just 29 league appearances in two and a half years from the 1969/70 season he switched together with Neil Young for the second division Preston North End at the end of January 1972. He had played his last competitive game for Manchester City more than three months earlier in October 1971 as a left-back against Everton (1-0).
Connor completed 29 championship games for "PNE" before returning to Manchester City during the 1974/75 season. There, however, he only came into play in the reserve team before he let his active professional career expire. Then Connor moved to the coaching field, where he looked after Macclesfield Town in the amateur area . He later had to pay tribute to the various injuries during his professional career when artificial hip joints were placed on both sides.
