Ville Tietäväinen (born October 20, 1970 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish architect, graphic designer, illustrator and cartoonist.

Life

In 1995, Tietäväinen and Harri Hannula published his first comic, Hymyilevä kuu . Whose action takes place in Thailand. Also in 1995 he founded his design agency Studio Tietäväinen . In 2003 Tietäväinen's second comic, Linnut ja meret (German translation of the title: Birds and Seas ) appeared. This deals with the topic of human freedom, forbidden love and immovable social structures and takes place in Hong Kong. Under the title Des Oiseaux, des Mers appeared Linnut yes meret in French translation.

Tietäväinen's third comic, Näkymättömät kädet (German translation of the title: Invisible Hands ), was published in 2011 and has more than 200 pages. Tietäväinen worked on the book for five years. The creation and publication of Näkymättömät kädet was made possible by a five-year grant from the Finnish Culture Council, which Tietäväinen received in 2006. Initially, Tietäväinen researched various books for his comic, but then traveled to Morocco and Spain with the anthropologist Marko Juntunen to do on-site research. Näkymättömät kädet brings the facts and fiction together. Näkymättömät kädet is set in Spain and tells the story of the Moroccan family man Rashid. He loses his job as a tailor in his home country. In order to continue to support his family, he leaves them to look for work in Europe. He emigrated to southern Spain as an illegal immigrant without a passport and tried to build a new life there. The countless greenhouses there have a great need for guest workers and so Rashid becomes one of many. The comic deals with the reality of guest workers in the 21st century - low pay, poor working conditions and the hope for a better life. Näkymättömät kädet made Tietäväinen one of the best known and most important contemporary Finnish comic artists. In 2014 , Näkymättömät kädet will be published in German by avant Verlag under the title Invisible Hands .

In 2011 Tietäväinen received the Finnish Cultural Foundation Award, Finland's most important cultural award. In 2013, Ville Tietäväinen was awarded the Silver Award in the category "Images and Illustrations" by Grafia (Association of Professional Graphic Designers in Finland) for his caricatures of Finnish presidential candidates and leaders of Finnish parties.

Press review

About Tietäväinen's political cartoons

"The cartoonist has composed the images by playfully incorporating fragments from the nation's history and culture, thus providing the viewer with a multi-layered opportunity to interpret the images in a scale beyond that of the written word. The virtuoso-like draftsmanship merges with precise and well-anatomized fundamental ideas. "

Näkymättömät kädet (2011)

Näkymättömät kädet is the biggest media breakthrough in the history of Finnish comics. It feels like literally every publication in Finland has printed a rave review of the book. It was one of the year's biggest events in the whole publishing sector. Tietäväinen worked on his 200+ page book for five years. It tells the story of Rashid, an illegal immigrant to Spain. Tietäväinen draws in a realistic style with enormous attention to perspective and other details. To start with he took two research trips to North Africa and Spain to familiarize himself with the subject matter. All that took a lot of labor and time. The result, however, is an effortless read. The impressive, only slightly melodramatic, story is told with a touching portrayal of the fully realized main character. "
