Jacob Karlzon (born October 19, 1970 in Jönköping ) is a Swedish jazz pianist and composer. He is considered "one of the outstanding pianists in the successor of Esbjörn Svensson ."

Live and act

Karlzon presented his debut album in 1992. In 1997 he gained attention in Sweden with the Malmö combo Blue Pages . Internationally, since 1999 he has emerged as the musical director of Viktoria Tolstoy's band , with whom he has been on numerous tours and for which he also composed. He is also a member of the trumpeter Peter Asplund's quartet . He was also the pianist of the Tolvan Big Band for several years . In 2008 he released an album as a solo pianist, which is compositionally inspired by Maurice Ravel and received a lot of critical acclaim. With his quintet he is more oriented towards hard bop , while in his trio with Hans Andersson and Jonas Holgersson there are also metal influences. He has performed at numerous festivals not only in Scandinavia, but also in Great Britain and Germany.

Karlzon has also performed with Billy Cobham , Kenny Wheeler , Bob Berg , Tim Hagans , Jeff Ballard , Norma Winstone , Cæcilie Norby , Nils Landgren , Silje Nergaard , Rigmor Gustafsson , Lina Nyberg , Trine-Lise Væring , Anders Bergcrantz and Putte Wickman . With his band he also accompanied the Danish singer Hanne Boel .

Prizes and awards

In 1997 he was with the band Blue Pages with the price Jazz i Sverige excellent. In the same year he was voted Newcomer of the Year by the jazz critics on Swedish radio P2. With the quartet of Peter Asplund Quartet he won the Gyllene Skivan and the Manifestgala Prize with Lochiel's Warning in 2007 . In 2010 he received the Swedish Django d'Or in the Contemporary Star of Jazz category . In the same year, he was named jazz musician of the year by the Swedish radio audience poll.
