Hanne Boel (born August 31, 1957 in Bagsværd , Gladsaxe Kommune ) is a Danish singer who mainly interprets songs from the genres of soul , jazz , rock and pop . She also teaches as a professor of music at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory .

Life

Hanne Boel grew up in Bagsvaerd, a suburb of Copenhagen . She trained as a music teacher at Det Kongelige Danske Music Conservatory until 1980 and then studied for a year at Berklee College of Music . Back in Denmark she taught at various music schools and advanced her career as a singer. From 1981 to 1986 she was a member of the Danish soul-funk big band Blast, with whom she released two albums during this time. In 1985 Boel took part in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix , the Danish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . She performed Kentner's song Piano together with singer Lise Dandanell and Tommy Kenter on the piano . However, this only made them tenth and last place. In 1987 Boel released the jazz album Shadow Of Love with Jørgen Emborg , Mads Vinding and Alex Riel on the Danish jazz label Stunt Records.

In 1988 Boel began a solo career as a soul singer and released her solo debut album Black Wolf on Medley Records. For this she won a Danish Music Award in the category Best Danish Singer. The Danish music producer Poul Bruun, who also produced her next records, was involved in the album. Boel's second album Dark Passion was released in 1990 and won four Danish Music Awards, including Hit of the Year for the song I Wanna Make Love to You . More than 340,000 units of Dark Passion have been sold. Other albums followed, which were particularly successful in Norway. Kinda Soul (1992), Misty Paradise (1994), Silent Violence (1996) and the 1995 best-of album became number one hits there. In addition, Boel's albums were able to place themselves regularly in the Swedish charts. With Misty Paradise she also succeeded in doing this in German-speaking countries and the single All It Takes that was extracted from it came to number 29 in the Austrian charts.

In the 1990s, Boel became very popular and commercially successful in Scandinavia. From the beginning of her career to 2003, she sold a total of over 2.5 million records. When she tried to go more experimental with her music in the late 1990s, this met with little interest from her audience. Their album Need (1998) and the electro-pop record Boel & Hall (2000), released in collaboration with Martin Hall, could no longer follow up on the success of their predecessors. In order to force a comeback, Boel reunited with producer Poul Bruun after a temporary separation and in 2002 released the rock-pop album Beware Of The Dog . It reached the top of the charts in her home country Denmark. The follow-up albums Abaco (2004), Private Eye (2007) and A New Kinda Soul (2008) also made it into the Danish top ten.

Boel then released two albums with jazz interpretations on Stunt Records, I Think It Is Going To Rain (2010) and The Shining Of Things (2011). She worked with the pianists Carsten Dahl and Jacob Karlzon . Her last album to date, Outtakes , was released by Warner in 2014 and contains older songs (especially covers and features) that were created over the course of her career but were not released at the time.

Boel is married and has two grown children. She lives on a farm north of Copenhagen. From 2009 to 2014 she taught as a professor at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory , where she was also Vice-Rector .
