Charvel is a guitar brand founded by Wayne Charvel in the 1970s and based in Azusa , California and later Glendora , California. Charvel brand products were popularized in the 1980s by famous rock and heavy metal guitarists such as Edward Van Halen ( Van Halen ), Richie Sambora ( Bon Jovi ), Warren DeMartini ( Ratt ), Randy Rhoads , Jake E. Lee ( Ozzy Osbourne ), Vinnie Vincent ( Kiss ), Eddie Ojeda ( Twisted Sister ), George Lynch ( Dokken ), Criss Oliva ( Savatage ), Allan Holdsworth , Shawn Lane and others.

history

1970s

After Wayne Charvel worked for Fender for three years in the early 1970s , he opened Charvel's Guitar Repair in 1974 and performed repaints and repairs on Fender products. His workshop built a reputation for repairs, special painting and the manufacture of spare parts. When Asian companies started copying Charvel's products and selling them below the price, Charvel decided to build their own guitars. The wooden components of the guitars were originally made by Boogie and Schecter, while the hardware was Charvel products and other spare parts. Wayne Charvel sold the brand to Grover Jackson in 1978 and left Charvel Guitars .

After Grover Jackson bought the brand, Charvel began making guitar corpora, which were resold to Mighty Mite and DiMarzio . The income was used to be able to produce your own guitar necks from now on. At that time, BC Rich , SD Curlee, and Music Man contacted Charvel to enter into contracts for the manufacture and supply of various wooden parts. With the profit from these businesses, Charvel was able to equip itself with additional tools and machines, and to gain the experience necessary to survive in the competition of the guitar brands.

In the late 1970s, Charvel made some changes to the design of the Fender Stratocaster , so that the guitars were now often equipped with only one humbucker instead of three single coils . This "modernized" version of the Stratocaster (often called the Superstrat ) met the demands that the heavy metal scene of the time placed on the guitar sound. The guitars produced by Charvel were also known for their creative graphics and paintwork, unpainted maple necks and other innovative designs.

1980s

In 1980 Grover Jackson met guitarist Randy Rhoads , who had recently joined Ozzy Osbourne's new band. They worked together and developed a guitar that should complement the Flying V with the polka-dots, which was built by Karl Sandoval for Rhoads. The first prototype wasn't fancy enough for Rhoads, but the second design liked it, and Rhoads named the guitar Concorde . Jackson feared that the Concorde's radical design would deviate too much from Charvel's Superstrat design and would meet with rejection. That is why he decided to give the guitar his own name in the event that the design did not catch on. The guitar was a huge hit, however, and ultimately led to the formation of Jackson Guitars .

Charvel (and Jackson) guitars were produced in Glendora, California until 1986. In 1986 the production was relocated to Japan to meet the increased demand and to enable mass production of the guitars. In 1989 Jackson finally sold Charvel / Jackson to the Japanese manufacturer IMC (International Music Corporation), so that Charvel guitars were made exclusively in Japan from 1986 to 1991.

2002 - The rebirth of Charvel

In 2002 Fender bought Charvel / Jackson and the brand experienced a renaissance. They began to recreate the old San Dimas models, which were now much sought-after collectors' items, and they were again produced in the USA. Charvel now offers a variety of models including less expensive guitars made in Japan and more expensive American-made instruments. In addition, they also offer a custom shop . Replicas of the Frankenstrat by Edward Van Halen , the San Dimas models by Warren DeMartini and the White Pearl by Jake E. Lee were also produced. But younger guitarists like Guthrie Govan are also endorsers at Charvel.
