List of Governors of the Philippines
The governor of the Philippines (Spanish: Gobernador de Filipinas ) ruled the Spanish colony of the Philippines in the period from 1565 to 1898. From 1898 to 1935, the Philippines were under US sovereignty, first by military governors (English: Military Governor ), later of so-called civil - and General governors ( civil Governors or Governors General ) was applied.
After the first contact of the Europeans with the islands by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, who established the Spanish claim to the land, and further Spanish expeditions from 1525 to 1542, Miguel López de Legazpi established the first colonial settlements in 1565. In 1571 the Spanish fortification of the settlement in Manila followed .
The colonial administration (which was essentially limited to the effect in Manila) was part of the viceroyalty of New Spain ; the most important trade relations followed the Manila- Acapulco route . From 1762 to 1764 the British occupied Manila during the Seven Years' War and forced the Spanish colonial administration to move to Iloco .
With the independence of Mexico and the end of the Viceroyalty, the Philippines were administered directly from Spain from 1821 onwards. In 1896 the Katipunan independence war began and lasted until 1897. In 1898 the Spanish-American War broke out, which ended in August 1898 with the defeat of the Spanish; rule over the Philippines passed to the USA on January 1, 1899 with the Peace of Paris .
After 1935, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was set up, headed by elected presidents rather than governors.
