Juan Antonio Martínez (†  April 30, 1854 in Guatemala City ) was Guatemalan President for a short time .

Life

Martínez was a wealthy merchant and banker with a moderately liberal disposition but without any political experience when he was elected president of the Guatemalan National Assembly on August 16, 1848 . His election was preceded by the resignation of the Conservative President Rafael Carrera, forced by the Liberal Party . Since Carrera had resigned but still had considerable means of power, none of the prominent liberal leaders wanted to make himself available to succeed him in the tense situation that threatened to escalate into an armed conflict. Therefore, the choice fell on the hitherto largely unknown Martínez. Due to his political inexperience, Martínez was unable to assert himself against the conservative opposition or even against the various wings of his own party. After just 100 days in office, he resigned on November 28 and had to sign an "irrevocable declaration of renunciation" of the presidency.
