Rusk is the district capital and seat of the county seat of Cherokee County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located at the intersection of USHighways 69 and 84 , around 190 km southeast of Dallas and has a total area of 17.7 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.
history
The city was named after General Thomas Jefferson Rusk , a senator and signatory of the Declaration of Independence for the Republic of Texas .

According to the 2000 census, 5,085 people in 1,306 households and 867 families lived here. The population density was 287.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 62.71% White, 30.01% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.96% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 5.15% other ethnic groups. About 0.98% were mixed race and 6.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,306 households, 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.6% of them were married couples living together. 17.5% were single mothers and 33.6% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were single households and 16.0% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.
17.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9% 18 to 24, 39.3% 25 to 44, 20.6% 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 154.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 168.4 men.
