geography

Wills Point is 75 kilometers east of Dallas and 210 kilometers west of Shreveport on US Highway 80 .

history

The name Wills Point goes back to William Wills, a local tax advisor who had settled in the place in the 1840s. He used this location on the road connecting Dallas and Shreveport to provide accommodations for travelers. Before the construction of a railway line there was only a stagecoach service. Due to the prosperity of the place, an election was held in May 1877, with the aim of moving the county seat from Canton to Wills Point. A two-thirds majority was required to achieve this, but it was narrowly missed. Nevertheless, the city continued to flourish and had, among other things, a post office, an opera house, several hotels, egrenier machines (English: cotton gins ), schools and a newspaper. The place is still attractive as a quiet residential area to the nearby metropolis of Dallas.

The occurrence of an extraordinarily high number of Bluebirds ( Rotkehl-Hüttensänger ( Sialia sialis )) prompted the city administration to organize a Bluebird Festival every spring from 1993 onwards . Since an inventory of the populations determined the greatest density of individuals of this songbird species in the state of Texas, the then governor George W. Bush named Wills Point the Bluebird Capital of Texas . This was confirmed by the State Legislature on February 5, 1995 .
