Canton is the district capital and seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) of Van Zandt County in the US state Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is located in the center of the county in northeast Texas, about 70 km east of Dallas , on Texas State Routes 19 and 64 , and has a total area of ​​13.4 km 2 , of which 1.1 km 2 is water.

history

Canton was the first place in this area to be established in 1850. It was named after Old Canton in Smith County , the place of origin of the first settlers. The same year the first courthouse was built and a post office, the fourth in the county, opened.

In 1853 the first school, the Canton Academy , opened its doors and in 1860 the first weekly newspaper, the Canton Weekly Times, appeared . In 1880, James S. Hogg , who served for many years as a district attorney, became governor of Texas.

The city became known nationwide when it became known in the early 1930s that the gangster couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow had lived for a long time in the Dixie Hotel , which was built in 1915 .
