history

The Cherokee Indians contracted land around what is now the Grand Saline in 1834 and extracted salt by evaporating the water from a surface salt marsh. After the land was cleared for settlement, John Jordan and other settlers acquired land and named the place Jordan's Saline. Mirabeau B. Lamar drove out the natives and the new settlers continued to work with salt production. However, due to the very simple manufacturing process and the poor transport options, the yield was low. It was not until some improvements were made in the salt works, such as digging shallow wells and installing pumps, boilers and treadmills, that production could be increased. During the Civil War , the salt works were taken over and operated by the Confederates . The performance at this time was approximately 100 bags of 100 pounds each. (45 kg) salt per day. After the end of the war the systems were returned to private hands and the output increased to around 250 bags per day. After the Texas and Pacific Railway ran through the town in 1872 , a depot was built and the name of the settlement was changed to Grand Saline. In the following years, the extraction technology was continuously improved and adapted to the most modern conditions. Studies have shown that the mother salt bed is a remnant of a deserted sea during the Permian Age around 250 million years ago. Calculations of the salt located under the earth's surface resulted in a total weight of approx. 3,791,508,184,000 tons, according to which extraction will be available for many thousands of years. The salt consists of 98.2 to 98.5% pure sodium chloride .

In the early summer of each year, a Salt Festival is held in Grand Saline . The focus is on the Salt Palace built from blocks of salt .
