The Lower Saxony Mining Archive or Mining (construction) archive Clausthal in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ( district of Goslar ) preserves documents from the Middle Ages to modern times that were created in the area of responsibility of the former Clausthal Higher Mining Authority . Organizationally, it is a branch of the Lower Saxony State Archives , Hanover Department, which also looks after it professionally. The property is managed by the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology , the successor to the Upper Mining Office . In addition to the Freiberg Mining Archive and the Bochum Mining History Documentation Center , the Lower Saxony Mining Archive is “the most important special archive on the history of mining in German-speaking countries”.

The archive holdings, the oldest documents of which date from the 13th century, comprise around 4000 meters of shelf space (as of 2009). It consists of historical administrative documents from mining authorities , mines , salt works , metal works , lime works and other mining facilities in the Harz region . There are also stocks from the other districts in Lower Saxony.

In 2000, a new building designed by Meinhard von Gerkan was inaugurated, which houses a magazine and reading room on 835 m² . The west facade is clad with lead in allusion to the Clausthal mining tradition , while the east facade is clad with larch wood , which has acquired a gray patina over time . In the context of the German Facade Prize for ventilated curtain facades in 2002, the “courageous choice of materials and the simple basic design” were mentioned in the category of recognition for new buildings .
