history
Carrizo Springs is Dimmit County's oldest town, founded in 1865 when Levi English brought a group of fifteen settler families there. Another group of settlers reached the place two years later. When Dimmit County was founded in 1880, the small settlement of Carrizo Springs was named the county's capital. This marked the beginning of the targeted development and expansion of the village: a school building was built in 1881, the town hall in 1883, a newspaper appeared from 1884, and two churches were built by 1885. The population was around 900 in 1885.
In the 19th century, the inhabitants mostly lived from cattle and sheep breeding, until around 1900 underground water reservoirs were discovered, with the help of which land was irrigated on a large scale and thus agriculturally usable areas were created. In 1910 the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad connected the place to their rail network, in the same year Carrizo Springs received city rights. The population rose to 1,200 by 1915. In 1916 the place received electricity.
Despite the drop in the price of agricultural products in the early 1920s, during which many farmers had to give up their farms, the population grew from 2,171 in 1936 to 2,494 in 1943.
