The Cherokee County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Rusk .
geography
The county is east of the geographic center of Texas, about 100 km from the Louisiana border and has an area of 2,750 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Smith County , Rusk County , Nacogdoches County , Angelina County , Houston County , Anderson County, and Henderson County .
history
Cherokee County was formed in 1846 from parts of Nacogdoches County. It was named after the Cherokee , an Indian people.

As of the 2000 census , there were 46,659 people in Cherokee County. 2,824 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 16,651 households and 12,105 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.34 percent white, 15.96 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 7.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.34 percent were from two or more races. 13.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,651 households, 33.4 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers, and 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.11 people.
26.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,313 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,750. Males had a median income of $ 26,410 versus $ 19,788 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,980. 13.7 percent of families and 17.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
