John Bell Hood
John Bell Hood (born June 1, 1831 in Owingsville , Bath County , Kentucky , † August 30, 1879 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an officer in the US Army until 1861 and then a general in the Confederate Army .
Life
Hood was the son of doctor John W. Hood and Theodosia French Hood. He was the cousin of Confederate General Gustavus Woodson Smith and nephew of Congressman Richard French . The latter prompted Hood's appointment to the Military Academy in West Point , New York , which he graduated in 1853 as the 44th of his class. His classmates included the later US Generals James B. McPherson and John McAllister Schofield , and his artillery instructor was George Henry Thomas . Hood became a lieutenant in the 4th US Infantry Regiment and later to the 2nd US Cavalry Regiment in Texas - Deputy Regimental Commander Robert Edward Lee .
Hood became the Confederation's youngest general at the age of 33 .
He was u. a. Participants in the battles: Peninsula Campaign , Seven-Day Battle , Second Battle of the Bull Run , Battle of Antietam , Fredericksburg , Gettysburg (here his left arm was crippled, which he could not move for a lifetime), Battle of Chickamauga (here he lost his right leg and survived the amputation with a lot of luck), the Atlanta campaign , Franklin and the Battle of Nashville . The latter two battles earned him the nickname Widow Maker (Widow Maker) .
Hood died on August 30, 1879, completely impoverished of yellow fever in New Orleans, leaving behind ten children.
The Fort Hood military base in Texas is named after him .
