Galneryus is a power metal band that was formed in 2001 in Osaka ( Japan ).

history

Beginnings

The band was founded in 2001 by guitarist Syu ( Animetal , Valkyr, Aushvitz, Masaki Project) and singer Yama-B (AxBites, Rekion, River End, Gunbridge, Iron Attack). Their goal was to build a band that would artistically express the ideas and musical tastes of the two founders. The founders of the band started looking for suitable musicians to complete the line-up. Shogo Himuro was hired as bassist, Toshihiro Yui (Cemetery, Honey Quest) took over the drums and A, who had already played with Syu at Valkyr, came as keyboardist.

In October 2001, the band released a two-track, independently-produced EP called United Flag .

In August 2002 they went back to the studio, where the second EP Rebel Flag (also under an independent label on Iron Shock) was produced. The recordings were made with the same line-up as on the previous EP - with one exception: Keyboardist A had been replaced by Yoshinori Kataoka.

The success of this second EP brought Galneryus a number of offers from various record companies and they were given the opportunity to do several tours. In 2003 the band was invited to perform at the "Melodic Metal Festival" organized by the Swedish power metal band Dragonland . Following this festival, Galneryus were asked by their Swedish colleagues to be part of Dragonland's next Japan tour.

The band also received requests for other projects, including agreeing to record two songs for compilation cover albums. One of these cover songs was Black Diamond (originally by the Finnish band Stratovarius ) on the album Stand Proud! III , the second was Soldier of Fortune by the Japanese band Loudness , which appeared on the album Japanese Heavy Metal Tribute Tamashii II . The musical line-up changed again for the recordings of the two cover versions : Yusuke replaced Shogo Himuro on bass and Yoshinori Kataoka was now Yuhki (Ark Storm) on keyboard. The two compilation albums appeared simultaneously in December 2002 on the record label VAP , from which the band also received a recording contract.

2003–2006: The Flag of Punishment , Advance to the Fall and Beyond the End of Despair ...

Under the label VAP Galneryus could finally start with the studio work for their first album. In October 2003 the debut LP The Flag of Punishment was released . In addition to the five previously published titles (each in a new version and new recording), it contained a whole series of new songs. The famous Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano was responsible for the design of the LP cover . At this point the line-up changed again: Yuhki now played keyboard and Junichi Satoh drums.

In March 2005 the second album, Advance to the Fall , was finally released. The response was enormous - the song Silent Revelation in particular was a great success.

A number of live concerts followed before the band went back into the studio to work on their third album. Beyond the End of Despair ... came out in July 2006. A few months later, the first DVD, Live for Rebirth , was released with a concert that was recorded during the “Die for Rebirth” tour.

2007–2008: One for All - All for One and Reincarnation

In 2007 Galneryus announced that Yu-To would play bass instead of Tsui, and in the same year released their fourth album, One for All - All for One . The album was the first to hear songs that were sung entirely in Japanese. This marked the beginning of a new era in the band's history, because until then they had only published titles that were written in English. Around this time, a cover album called Voices from the Past was released , which contained five cover songs, one of which each band member had chosen.

In 2008 a new single was released: The tracks included Alsatia and Cause Disarray formed the opening and closing songs of the anime series Daughters of Mnemosyne . At that time the band also presented a new DVD - Live for All - Live for One with recordings from the 2007 tour.

In the same year 2008 Galneryus started a new tour under the name "Path to the Fifth Flag" and then produced the download single Shining Moments (three tracks), which was available for download from July 30th. Reincarnation , the fifth album mastered by Ted Jensen , was released on September 10, 2008 . Jensen had previously worked successfully with bands such as Mucc , Sepultura and Iron Maiden . Shortly thereafter, another cover album titled Voices from the Past II was announced - as a continuation of the 2007 releases.

One month after the release of the fifth album, Galneryus surprisingly announced via the official website that front man Yama-B was leaving the band. Yama-B himself said that he made this decision because the band's musical style had changed recently. The separation took place by mutual agreement and it was agreed that this was the best decision for both sides. Yama-B left Galneryus shortly after the "Back to the Flag" tour, which ran from October 23 to December 6.

2009–2011: Resurrection and Phoenix Rising

Galneryus live in Busan , 2012.

The year 2009 was marked by a lot of speculation and there was little information about who the new singer would be. After a few months the decision was finally made: Masatoshi "Sho" Ono would come as the front man for Yama-B. In the same year Sho made his debut with Galneryus at the Loud Park Festival . Bassist Yu-To left the band soon after, and Taka came for him. Also in 2009 were two best-of albums with the band's biggest hits - Best Of The Braving Days and Best Of The Awakening Days .

On April 21, 2010 Galneryus presented their first studio project with Sho - the three-track EP Beginning of the Resurrection . One of the tracks is the closing song A Far-off Distance from the anime series Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin . On June 23, the sixth album, Resurrection , was released. The differences between Yama-B and Sho are clearly noticeable here. Nevertheless, the band has since managed to maintain a stylistic and tonal continuity and to incorporate musical elements that are reminiscent of the early Galneryus albums. With Phoenix Rising , the band released their seventh studio album on October 5, 2011.

2012–2014: Angel of Salvation and Vetelgyus

In January 2012 the band released a mini-album under the name "Kizuna", the song of the same name was used in the pachinko game "Pachinko CR First of the Blue Sky". In July of the same year a new single "Hunting for your Dream" followed, which was published as the closing song of the anime series Hunter x Hunter .

The long-awaited eighth studio album Angel of Salvation was released on October 10, 2012. The eponymous track "Angel of Salvation" was the longest song in the band's history up to this point. Some elements from the “ Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 "is used. The success of the album also brought Galneryus more attention outside of Japan.

For the 10th anniversary, the band released two albums with new recordings of their most successful songs to date. After a few tours and performances in Hong Kong and Taiwan , their first European tour was finally due in July 2014. More than 2,000 visitors came to their performances in Germany , France and Spain .

The ninth studio album Vetelgyus was released on September 24, 2014. A single followed in December: "Attitude to Life". The song was used as the end credits song for the anime series Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds) .

2015–2019: Under the Force of Courage, Ultimate Sacrifice and Into the Purgatory

On December 9, 2015, the band's first suit album was released: Under the Force of Courage . After their tour in March 2016, Galneryus announced that Jun-ichi was leaving the band and Fumiya (Thousand Eyes, Undead Corporation) would join the band as the new drummer.

With the eleventh studio album: Ultimate Sacrifice , which was released on September 28, 2017, the band also switched the label to Warner Music Japan. Your related tour: Just play to the Sky - What could we do for you ...? followed accordingly after the album.

Galneryus announced their 15th anniversary in 2018 and started their tour with the name: Play to the forthcoming Future. Before the release of the next album, they played for the first time in America at the ProgPower USA Metal Fair on September 5th, 2019.

The twelfth album: Into the Purgatory, which was released on October 23, 2019, slipped into the slightly darker scene. With the song: The Followers , Syu and Taka experiment with the style of Sho's voice. The rest of the album falls into the classic Galneryus sound and is a step in the positive direction from the last album: Ultimate Sacrifice , after the previous album got rather mediocre feedback from the fans.

After the release of their 12th album, they announced their next tour: Wailing in the Flames of Purgatory , which started on October 23rd and ended on January 10th, 2020. We are still waiting for the next live DVD / Blu-Ray.
