When Joe realizes that his younger sister is about to be adopted and he fears that she will be abused and that he will never see her again, the other boys help him to escape. For this they are beaten up and put in solitary confinement. It turns out that Tortoise lost his entire family in the atomic bombing on Hiroshima and grew up on the streets. Joe reaches the orphanage and tries to escape with his sister, but they are caught by the police and he is brought back. His sister only tells him to forget about her and that she can manage on her own.

Overseer Ishihara hates Sakuragi because he is always calm with him. In order to wipe him out and play the boys off against each other, he tells Uncovered, who grew up in poverty and famine and distrusts everyone around him that Sakuragi killed his own parents, so that Uncovered gets afraid of Sakuragi. When a fire breaks out from a cigarette, Ishihara is supposed to free the inmates. The latter throws away the keys to Sakuragi's cell to kill him. But he's already evacuated and outside Sakuragi confronts him for his fear of him before he helps save others from the fire. Uncovered it is impressed that there are people who risk their lives to save others. So he rushes to help himself, finds the keys and manages to free the boys against Ishihara's resistance. Sakuragi is passed out and taken to the hospital , where he tells the nurse Setsuko that his five older brothers were all killed. Because his father was a broken man after the war, who yelled, got drunk, and was unemployed, he was no longer respected and committed suicide . Sakuragi sees the blame for this with himself, is afraid of loss and fled into boxing.

Before the boys went to prison, they carved their dreams into a tree and promised to meet again after they were there. Sakuragi is transferred to another cell with sturdy boys who want to beat him up, humiliate him and break him. Mario wants to be beaten for Sakuragi. His hand is shattered with a stone, which should make boxing difficult for him. When Sakuragi finds out, the situation escalates and his cellmates know that they have gone too far. Ishihara believes that Sakuragi was beaten to death and is shocked when he sees everyone lying on the ground bloody.

Dr. Sasaki suggests Ishihara to let Sakuragi break the rules by watching his friends get hurt and humiliated. They try to endure the pain to protect Sakuragi, but he attacks Ishihara. He then wants to starve him and pass the cause of death as heart failure. However, the tortoise manages to smuggle food into Sakuragi's cell. Guard Kumagai knows about the incident and wants to help the boys, but is against Ishihara and Dr. Sasaki powerless. When Sakuragi is still alive after two weeks and his release approaches, Ishihara becomes nervous. Kumagai wants to bring Mario back to the cell from the hospital for sexual assault by Dr. Sasaki fears. But he is caught by Ishihara when he learns that Sakuragi has been subjected to Chinese water torture. Ishihara kills him and makes it look like a car accident. Cell 6 is now under the supervision of Ishihara. Mario tells the others what happened. They know Sakuragi will not be released alive and plan to save him. Joe outwits Dr. Sasaki and free the other guys. They make their way to Sakuragi's cell, where Mario knocks Ishihara out. They bring Sakuragi to safety before the alarm goes off and stop the pursuers. After their outbreak, Mario feels bad about leaving the others behind, but Joe and Tortoise convince him that it was his calling to save Sakuragi's life.

Nurse Setsuko explains to Tortoise where an unused farm is located where they can hide and takes care of them. When Sakuragi regains consciousness, he feels it is his responsibility to go back to the school with the others to protect them from their impending torments. Joe is drawn for the task. Since he tells Sasaki and Ishihara that he knows how they were involved in Ei'ichi's suicide and Sakuragi has the suicide note, Cabbage, Soldier and Uncovered are released from solitary confinement and no longer mistreated. Together with Joe, they serve the remainder of their prison term. In a market, Mario and Tortoise meet a woman named Lilly who sponsors boxing competitions in a nearby US base in Tachikawa . Mario, who is interested in boxing like Sakuragi, takes part in a round and is impressed by the strength of the men there. You get paid and Mario makes a commitment to get stronger. Sakuragi and Setsuko fall in love. He trains Mario in boxing and Tortoise sells goods on the black market to make money. But before Mario's boxing match begins, the police catch Turtle and learn that Ishihara has noticed him. He tells Sakuragi on the phone while Mario wins the competition.

Ishihara wants to continue the fight for life or death with a knife and attacks. Sakuragi just takes the knife from him and goes to Mario's fight. On the way, however, he meets Dr. Sasaki, the police and US security forces. When he doesn't want to put the knife down, he is shot. The six friends and Setsuko are deeply affected. They promise to lose their dreams and take revenge on Sasaki for Sakuragi's death. Mario first prepares to kill Ishihara. But Sakuragi would not have wanted that, and so Mario finally abandons his plan. Setsuko develops the feelings she had for Sakuragi for Mario because she sees similarities to Sakuragi in him. Dr. Sasaki is running for mayoral. During his election campaign, he developed fears that Sakuragi's friends would kill him. Eventually they show up at an event and play audio recordings of his crimes. So Sasakis has failed his election campaign.

Mario starts a fight with Kogure Yoshitaka in the bar where he works for attacking the bartender. Thereafter, he faces seven years in prison. Mario claims to have committed the crime for no reason. Joe and Soldat trick Yoshitaka by allowing Soldat to give him two blows and then threatening him with imprisonment. So they get a written statement from him, which is torn up and ignored by the prosecutor. It was only through Setsuko's confession, which Mario beat a teacher because he had raped her, as well as the description of Uncovered and because the inspector served with Uncovered's father in Manchuria , that Mario got away with a fine and the case becomes an administrative offense explained.

Setsuko is torn between Mario and the man she wants to marry. She warns Mario about his love for her, who doesn't know how to deal with his feelings either. Meanwhile, uncovered, has fun with prostitutes and wants to lose his virginity. Joe is expanding his career as a singer and musician by working as an assistant. He gets the chance to appear on a stage when the singer has disappeared and is well received by the audience. After that, however, he is beaten up because he attracts all the attention and competes with the singer and the band Five Lemons . He is threatened with being given mercury , which is supposed to cause him to lose his voice. He swears never to sing again. From the manager Nako Yamauchi, however, he gets the opportunity to be made into a big star and is ready to respond to the woman's perverse wishes. He also wants to finally find his sister through fame. But because he broke his promise, the Five Lemons and Ishihara try to hold him back or ruin the festival. But Yamauchi has support from the Yakuza Fukumoto gang. Nevertheless, she is later held with Mr. Kawamata and Joe is threatened and injured. Mr. Kawamata Shigo's son goes to see Mario. His friends save him from Ishihara shooting at the last minute. Finally, Joe is late and the audience is already gone. He doesn't get a second chance. He only sings like that in front of his friends. But then, among the last of the audience, there is still his sister Meg.

Turtle meets Uncovered's family and Uncovered tells him about his plans to study law. So he wants to be able to better help the boys with difficulties. Joe lends him money for it. He wants to run away with the prostitute Eri, who says she has a lot of debts and has to take care of her sister. For this he uses turtles and the money stolen from his mother. Turtle forgives him, however, but still sees the friendship endangered, since Uncovered is ready to give up everything for love. Soldier beats him up and tells him that he has also had sexual intercourse with her. He should come to his senses again and beware of disappointments that they are only “a piece of goods”.
