Slaves on Dope is a Canadian groove , alternative and nu-metal band from Montreal , which was founded in 1993, disbanded in 2004 and has been active again since 2009.

history

The band was founded in 1993, although the band name is meant ironically, as all members live drug-free. The line-up initially consisted of singer Jason Rockman, guitarists Avrum Nadigel and Kevin Jardine, bassist Patrick Francis and drummer Lenny Vartanian. After a first demo in 1993 under the name Feet , the EP Sober followed in the same year . In 1997 the debut album One Good Turn Deserves Another was released via Just a Minute Records , which was followed two years later by the EP Klepto on the same label. After ten tours through Canada, the members moved the band's headquarters to Los Angeles in 1999 . The band now consisted of Rockman and Jardine, bassist Frank Salvaggio and drummer Rob Urbani. Appearances with Papa Roach , System of a Down and Motörhead followed . Through Sharon Osbourne , the band achieved a place in 2000 at the Ozzfest as well as contact with producer Thom Panunzio . Osbourne also signed the band to their Divine Recordings label . In 2000 the band was on the soundtrack to Blair Witch 2 to hear. In October 2000 the album Inches from the Mainline followed . The band also contributed a cover version of the Black Sabbath song War Pigs for the tribute album Nativity in Black II and Poison's Look What the Cat Dragged In for Show Me Your Hits . In 2001 the Snocore Tour followed, in which, besides Slaves on Dope, Kittie and Fear Factory also took part. In April 2001 they went on tour through the USA together with Factory 81 , Drowning Pool and No One . The band was also one of the first to respond to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 by posting condolences to the bereaved and victims on their website the following day. In November, the recording of the new album began with co-producer Jason Slater . In February 2002 appearances were held, among others with Hatebreed . In August, the group War Pigs contributed to the sampler Mad Mike Jones Presents: Mototrax 1 on Sanctuary Records . In 2003 the album Metafour was released by Bieler Bros. Records . After the singer Rockman left the band in early 2004, the band announced their inactivity for an indefinite period. The members then devoted themselves to other projects. In 2009, Rockman and guitarist Kevin Jardine announced the start-up of Slaves on Dope. It was then active live, so the group could be seen in 2011, 2013 and 2015 at Heavy MONTRÉAL . In 2012, the album Over the Influence was released via Rock Science Records , which Horse joined in 2016 with a self-release.

style

According to Christian Graf in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon , the band initially played post-grunge before turning to groove metal. Joel McIver confirmed in his book The Next Generation of Rock & Punk Nu Metal that it was initially a post-grunge band. Andreas Heart of Rock Hard attested inches from the mainline next to "hard [n] Crossover - Metal with hoarse barked Hard - or Hatecore -Vocals the variety Refused or Snapcase " and "slower Groove -Parts and nasty melodies". In between, clear vocals are used, so that the aggressiveness is not lost, but the intensity would increase. Overall, there are multiple tonal parallels to Rage Against the Machine , Marilyn Manson and old Clawfinger , but Slaves on Dope has a higher proportion of heavy metal ., Martin Popoff classified the album in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 4: The '00s listened to alternative and nu-metal and heard similarities to Korn , Disturbed , Nonpoint and Papa Roach . Because of the singing, but also the exotic and modern rhythms, the music is also comparable to that of Sepultura . The music and lyrics have an aggressive character. David Perri noted in his review of Metafour in the same book that Slaves on Dope, like many other Nu-Metal bands at the time, was in an identity. The group tries their hand at radio-friendly rock in the style of Godsmack . The lyrics would give you the impression that someone just broke up.
