Factory 81 was an American nu-metal band from Detroit , Michigan that formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2003.

history

The band was formed in 1997. After several changes, the singer Nathan Wallace, the guitarist Bill Schultz, the bassist Kevin Lewis and the drummer Andy Cyrulnik found a permanent line-up. The band name came from Wallace, who was inspired by the print of the same name on one of his shirts. The name has no deeper meaning. This was followed by the first demos and local appearances. This was followed by the label Medea Records , which in 1999 released the debut album Mankind . A music video was also shot for the song Nanu . The album was originally supposed to be called "Manking", but a Detroit e-zine made a typo in an advertisement for the album. The band agreed to the changed title, which is why the name was changed shortly before the album was pressed. The following year the album was technically re-released with unreleased material and live songs. The release took place this year on Uptown Records and The Orchard . In October 2000, the group contributed a cover version of the Cypress Hill song Insane in the Brain for the sampler Take a Bite Outta Rhyme: A Rock Tribute to Rap . There were performances with Kittie , Mudvayne , Apartment 26 and Nonpoint towards the end of the year . In summer 2001 they went on tour with Ill Niño , 40 Below Summer and Chimaira . In addition, two songs were recorded for a split release with Lifer . After a tour of Japan , the band recorded twelve songs for a second album in the spring of 2002. Factory 81 initially signed a contract with Jive Records , but separated again from the label in 2002. Then the band started looking for another label to release their album. However, this remained inconclusive. In 2003 Lewis and Cyrulnik announced their departure, which meant the end for the band and the publication did not take place.

style

According to Christian Graf in Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon , the band mixes “tough metal with urban funk , dark grooves and strikingly melodic vocal lines”. Allmusic's Mike DaRonco wrote of the band that they play a mix of pounding metal and New School Hardcore in the style of Earth Crisis , Hatebreed and Strife . In an interview with voxonline.com Andy Cyrulnik named jazz , fusion , world music and tool as influences. Borivoj Krgin of Blabbermouth.net wrote about Mankind that it played faceless and ordinary Nu Metal in the style of Relative Ash , Slaves on Dope and Primer 55 . Factory 81 tries to imitate groups like Deftones , Limp Bizkit and Korn , which a band like Taproot does better.
