Lifer was an American nu metal and alternative metal band from Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , which was founded in 1999 under the name Strangers with Candy and split up in 2002. The group also called itself Driver for a short time .

history

The band was founded in early 1999 under the name Strangers with Candy and consisted of singer Nick Coyle, guitarist Aaron Fink, bassist Mark James Klepaski and drummer Chris Lightcap, although the group was initially just a cover band. At the end of the year, DJ Tony Kruszka joined the cast. A few months later, the group took part in MTV's Ultimate Cover Band Contest, where they played their versions of a-has Take On Me and Limp Bizkits Nookie , among others . This enabled the band to increase their popularity considerably. This was followed in 2000 by Smokeable Records, the EP No Need , which contains seven songs. At around the same time, the decision was made to rename it Lifer. The reason for the renaming was that there was already a TV show of the same name from Comedy Central . The group had previously been renamed Driver, but could not keep this name either, as there was already a band of the same name.

With Alex Lifeson as producer, the band then went into the studio to record their self-titled debut album, which was released in August 2001. Towards the end of the year, Klepaski and Fink left the cast to join Breaking Benjamin . After the publication of EP IV in 2002 it was dissolved.

style

For the taste of Mario Mesquita Borges from Allmusic , the band plays dark alternative metal that sounds wild and brutal overall. Christian Graf wrote in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon that the band played the cover version of Take On Me in a Nu-Metal guise. With the release of the album, the band wanted to make it clear that they were influenced by Tool , Godsmack , Faith No More and the Deftones . In his review of the album, Allmusic's Kurt Morris drew a comparison with Limp Bizkit and Korn . The music is not very original, only the vocals are convincing.
