Cuyahoga Falls is a city in Summit County , Ohio , United States .

geography

Cuyahoga Falls is bordered by Akron to the south and Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the northwest.

The city is traversed by the Cuyahoga River , which has a series of waterfalls that make the river unsailable at this point. Canoes had to be carried around this point. Today the rapids flow through the center of the city.

The city population is currently 49,374 (2000 census). Cuyahoga Falls is Summit County's second largest city.

Historical

Events

In the Treaty of Greenville had on August 3, 1795 in Fort Greenville the Indians a large part of their land in Ohio ceded to the United States. The dividing line ran from the mouth of the Cuyahoga River into Lake Erie along the river south to Portage in what is now Portage County and then further down the Tuscarawas River to Fort Laurens near what is now Bolivar .

Joshua Stow , who, as the companion of Moses Cleaveland , who gave the city of Cleveland its name , surveyed the land around Lake Erie, the so-called Connecticut Western Reserve , between 1796 and 1797 , took a liking to this land on the border river Cuyahoga. He bought nearly a square mile of land here and sent a relative, William Wetmore of Connecticut, to develop the area. Wetmore arrived in the area in 1804.

In 1812 the Indians withdrew from all over the Cuyahoga River area to ally with the British. However, after the British defeat in the British-American War of 1812, they never returned to the area.

On July 31, 1940, a serious railway accident occurred in Cuyahoga Falls when a railcar and a freight train collided head-on. 43 people died and five were also injured.

Surname

Today's Cuyahoga Falls was settled under the name "Manchester". Later it was mainly a request from the Post to rename the settlement, as there were already several settlements named "Manchester" in Ohio. Cuyahoga Falls was eventually named for the Cuyahoga River and the rapids that the river flows through here.

Culture

Blossom Music Center

The Blossom Music Center is the venue for the Blossom Festival , which takes place here every summer for ten weeks. The festival area was created for the Cleveland Orchestra , which is based here in the summer months. The first Blossom Festival took place on July 19, 1968, when the then chief conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell, conducted the first concert. Even then, in addition to the Cleveland Orchestra, other musicians made guest appearances and, in addition to the symphonic concerts, there were also jazz and folk events. Until 2005 the Blossom Festival had its own music director, since then the chief conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst , has taken over the musical direction of the summer festival.
