Michael Joseph Morell (born September 4, 1958 in Cuyahoga Falls , Ohio ) is a former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (DD / CIA). Following the resignation of Leon Panetta in 2011 and General David Petraeus the following year, he was also acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency (D / CIA) for a short time twice .

Life

Morell began his career with the CIA in 1980 as an international energy analyst . From 1999 he was head of the Asia, Pacific, South America department. He also managed the team that produced the daily report for US President George W. Bush . From 2006 to 2008 he was the first Associate Deputy Director of the CIA, from 2008 to 2010 Director for Intelligence at the National Counterterrorism Center . In January 2013 he resigned as acting CIA director, and in June as deputy CIA director. Since March 2013, John O. Brennan headed the CIA, a former security advisor to US President Obama. Morell left the CIA after 33 years on the grounds that he wanted more time to spend with his family. In the following years, Morell worked as a security advisor in the White House. President Obama appointed him to be a member of his Advisory Intelligence Council.

He was succeeded by lawyer Avril Haines , the first time a woman was appointed to the post of deputy CIA director.
