Pulse Ultra was a Montreal- based Canadian metal and rock band that was formed in 1997 and split in 2004.

history

Dominic Cifarelli, at a young age a fan of bands such as Pantera or Dream Theater as well as guitarist Steve Vai , comes from a conservative Italian family in Montreal. His parents disappointed his wish for a guitar with the Christmas present of a classical guitar. Still, this didn't stop him from going his way as a rock guitarist. After he and his friend Jeff Feldman (bassist) had been musically active in various ways in the second half of the 1990s, they decided to found Pulse Ultra in 1997. Maxx Zinno joined the cast as drummer. The self-composed songs were recorded and played to others at every opportunity. Allegedly at a Halloween party in 1999, where a drunk guest is said to have sung loudly to it. This guest was called Zo Vizza and became the official singer for Pulse Ultra. At a meeting with Taproot in the summer of 2000 on the occasion of their guest performance in Montreal, Cifarelli gave the band a demo . Through the manager of Taproot, Pulse Ultra finally achieved a recording contract in 2001 with the Velvet Hammer label, which is part of Atlantic Records . The following year the group worked on new songs. The recordings took place in Los Angeles , but had to be interrupted for a long time due to the death of Vizza's father. The singer's depression ultimately affected the lyrics. Despite a further delay due to illness, they held out in Los Angeles and completed the debut album Headspace . It was released on July 16, 2002. The sound carrier was produced by Taproot guitarist Mike DeWolf. In the run-up to the release they had denied a tour with American Head Charge and Gravity Kills . Later that year the band performed at both the American and European Ozzfest and was featured on the soundtrack for the video game Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 with the song "Build Your Cages . This was followed by tours with Taproot and Chevelle . Due to personal differences, the band broke up in 2004. Although Cifarelli had bad feelings about Los Angeles and could not imagine living there, he moved to the US rock metropolis after the end of Pulse Ultra and established himself as a musician and Songwriter .

style

According to Allmusic's MacKenzie Wilson , Cifarelli and Feldman were influenced by bands like Limp Bizkit and Deftones . In his review of the album, Brian O'Neill, also from Allmusic , wrote that there were clear post-grunge influences on it, the vocals being reminiscent of those of the Bush singer Gavin Rossdale . A comparison with Creed is also obvious. In songs like Put It Off immitiere to avant-garde moments of tool while Void rather Rap Metal of Incubus resemble. Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer described the music on the album as New Rock . The songs have a melody that is reminiscent of Incubus. Hard and soft elements are mixed up and acoustic instruments are also used occasionally. Muser9909 from ultimate-guitar.com assigned the band to alternative metal, as played by System of a Down and Deftones. On the album, the group mixes the progressive pieces from Tool with alternative metal moments from Incubus. The vocals are a cross between Brandon Boyd and Gavin Rossdale. The group was presented in a similar way in Billboard Magazine , namely as a mixture of tool and system of a down, just not as progressive as the former band and not as flashy as the latter. Pulse Ultra saw themselves as a "rock band with a pinch of progressive elements".

The texts are about being and appearances and self-discovery. The feeling of inner dissatisfaction when long-cherished dreams are fulfilled, a curse of capitalist society, also plays a major role.
