Homestead Records was an American record label founded in New York City , which existed from 1983 to 1996.

history

The label was founded in New York City . It was a sub-label of Dutch East India Trading , which acted as a distributor for experimental music and produced various labels of its own. Homestead Records had five managers over the years, including Gerard Cosloy, who founded the Matador Records label in 1990 together with Chris Lombardi from Dutch East India Trading . The last manager Steven Joerg added jazz artists to the label's catalog . In 1996, Homestead Records was abandoned. Steven Joerg then founded the small jazz label AUM Fidelity .

Focus

The Homestead label put an emphasis on rock music by American bands, which was guitar-oriented and heavily influenced by punk . Some of the bands represented on the label are considered important influences for grunge and noise rock . Major releases included albums from Dinosaur Jr. , Big Black , Phantom Tollbooth , GG Allin , Happy Flowers , Squirrel Bait , Bastro , Green River and Sebadoh . The label's catalog also included publications by Rhys Chatham , Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds , Einstürzende Neubauten , The Chills and Tall Dwarfs .
