The Soft Boys were an English rock band from Cambridge, active between 1976 and 1980 . According to Allmusic , they were one of the most influential groups in contemporary alternative music .

history

The Soft Boys originated in Cambridge in 1976 as Dennis and the Experts . The original members were Robyn Hitchcock (guitar), Rob Lamb (guitar), Andy Metcalfe (bass) and Morris Windsor (drums). Alan Davies replaced Lamb in late 1976, and Kimberley Rew eventually came in for Davies. In 1979 Metcalfe was replaced by Matthew Seligman.

The soft boys broke up after the release of their second album Underwater Moonlight . The album, released in 1980, is now considered a milestone in alternative rock music. Rew then celebrated success with Katrina and the Waves , while Hitchcock continued to play first solo, then with his new band "The Egyptians".

In 1994 the Soft Boys got together again for a British tour. In 2001 they recorded a new album, Nextdoorland , for Underwater Moonlight 's 20th anniversary , which was released in 2002.
