history

The name Celbridge is derived from the Irish Cill Droichid , which means something like "Church on the bridge". Sometimes you can also find the form kildrought in English.

The town of Kildrought (or Kildroighid ) developed around a factory founded by Thomas de-Hereford in the early 13th century .

The houses in the city center were built over a period of about 200 years, starting with Celbridge Abbey , built in 1703 by Bartholomew Van Homrigh . In 1709 William "Speaker" Conolly bought the property from Thomas Dongan , built his own villa and left the town development to the Protestant volunteers who had followed him to Celbridge. Their wages were guaranteed on the condition that they built stone houses with gable roofs.

Main street development began in 1720 when Robert Baillie had the Kildrought House built. The present St. Raphaels Hospital was built by Arthur Price in 1724 when he became Bishop of Meath . The former Collegiate School on Clane Road was built in 1732 by the architect Thomas Burgh, who also created the Royal Barracks and the library of Trinity College (both in Dublin). The Collegiate School was founded as a school for the poor and served as a Protestant boarding school for girls until 1972. Today the Setanta Hotel is located in the building. Mills Manor, built by Laurence Atkinson in 1805 and restored in 1985, now houses a community center.

Other sights include the Catholic Church from 1857, Holy Faith Monastery (1877) and the Christ Church (1884) of the Church of Ireland , which still contains the tower of an older church from 1813. The first parish church in Celbridge was built in the 14th century and burned down in 1798. It was in what is now the cemetery on Tea Lane . 22 Main Street was inhabited for a time by Richard Guinness and his sons Arthur , the founder of the Guinness brewery, and Samuel.

In the early 20th century, the Callender Paper Company was located in Celbridge , making paper from peat .

Castletown House

The Castletown House is one of Ireland's most famous country houses in the style of Palladian . It is an imposing building that was built in 1722 by the Speaker of the House of Commons, William Conolly (1662–1729). Tom Connolly inherited the house in 1758 and his wife, Lady Louisa , completed the interior decorations during the 1760s and 1770s.

The mansion contains the Long Gallery , a 24.4 meter (80 foot) long room decorated in Pompeian blue and gold, and the main cantilevered staircase in white Portland stone .

traffic

Street

The city's rapid growth brought traffic problems, especially since there is only one bridge over the Liffey. In 2003, the Celbridge Interchange created a connection to the M4 motorway and to the Irish Intel plant .

Kildare County Administration installed some traffic lights at the intersection of Liffey Bridge and Main Street in 2000 , but there were successful protests from local businesspeople: the lights were turned off again.

bus

Celbridge is served by Dublin Bus on routes 67, 67A and 67X. These bus routes connect the city with Dublin as well as the nearby towns of Lucan and Maynooth .

The Irish national bus company Bus Éireann also connects Celbridge with Dublin.

train

Broad Iarnród Éireann stop at the station in Hazelhatch, which is about three kilometers away from Celbridge. Shuttle buses bring travelers to the station.

As part of Transport21 , the route will be electrified in order to open a new DART line via Celbridge to Balbriggan . Completion is planned for 2015.

education

Celbridge has six elementary schools, one special school (Saint Raphael's), two secondary schools (St. Wolstans Community School for girls (the only school with an all-female school community in Ireland) and the Salesian College for boys). With the Glebe Primary Montessori School , Celbridge has had one of the few Montessori schools in Ireland since 1978 . The North Kildare Educate Together School (NKETS) can also be found here.

politics

Celbridge is in the constituency of Kildare North , which sends four MPs to the Dáil Éireann . It was initially a three-mandate constituency, but a fourth mandate was introduced due to the increase in population.

Although municipalities with more than 7,500 residents actually have a city council, there is no such body in Celbridge.

Celbridge GAA is the third oldest club in County Kildare and was founded on August 15, 1885.

Ballyoulster United and Celbridge Town AFC are the two main football clubs in Celbridge.
