Garfield - Der Film (Original title: Garfield: The Movie ) is a real-life film from 2004 , which is based on the cartoon character Garfield . Two years later, the sequel Garfield 2 was created .

action

The lazy, lasagna-loving and Mondays-hating tomcat Garfield meets the puppy Odie at his vet Liz's one day. Since this otherwise threatens a fate in the dog kennel, Garfield's owner Jon takes the dog home with him - much to Garfield's annoyance, who then irritates the dog wherever he can.

One day Jon and Liz go to a dog show with Odie, where Odie attracts attention with a dance routine. As a result, the television presenter Happy Chapman becomes aware of him, who would like to include Odie in his show, but Jon refuses. After Garfield tricked Odie out of the house, Odie ran away. He is later found by an old lady and taken into her apartment. In order to find the owner of the runaway dog, she distributed leaflets with his photo. She sees Happy Chapman, drives to the old lady and poses as the owner of Odie. Garfield sees Odie appearing on TV with Happy Chapman and decides to bring him back. After an adventurous trip to the television station and the active support of the mouse Louis, Chapman's former cat Persnikitty and other animals, Odie is finally freed by Garfield. Both become friends and can be brought back home with Jon and Liz.

Reviews

"A mixture of real and animated films aimed only at the simplest slapstick humor, completely unsuccessful in the German synchronization, which reveals the subversive elements of the comic template to undemanding entertainment for toddlers."

“[…] Cinema is like, uh, cat food: it's all a question of the ingredients and how you mix them. With mediocre computer animation, anemic actors and a story devoid of tension and witty ideas, it naturally can't taste good. In the original, Garfield is at least spoken by Bill Murray. Thomas Gottschalk does it in the German version. Bet that it will make everything look even more pensive? Conclusion: The Puss in Boots from Shrek 2 is awesome, Garfield only creates a hangover mood. "

backgrounds

Garfield was portrayed as a computer-animated character and was voiced by Bill Murray in the original version . About this role in Garfield, Murray later said in a death scene in the film Zombieland that the only thing he regrets was that he was in the film Garfield. In the German version, which had its cinema premiere on August 19, 2004, Garfield was dubbed by the German entertainer and presenter Thomas Gottschalk .

The script of the film is considered less than successful because it gave up many of the characteristics of the old Garfield comics. These included an intelligent Odie, Dr. Liz, who falls in love with Jon, a grown nermal and Garfield himself, who suddenly has a nagging conscience and actually likes Odie. In addition, some Garfield typical jokes were not used. Many elements like the scales, Lyman and the spiders were not included in the script.

With a budget of $ 50 million, the film grossed $ 198 million worldwide.

Differences to the comic or the cartoons and the film

  • In the comics and cartoons, Garfield doesn't move his lips when he's letting his mind wander. He's basically thinking his sentences.
  • Jon doesn't adopt Odie like he does in the movie by being told by Dr. Liz is conveyed, but he actually belongs to his best friend Lyman, whom he temporarily takes in at home and thus his dog Odie, who stayed even after Lyman no longer lives with him and the latter only shows up occasionally.
  • In the film, Jon and vet Dr. Liz since her youth.
  • In the comic, he meets Dr. Only met Liz when he took Garfield to the vet for a routine check-up. For him it's love at first sight, but Dr. Liz is not at all taken with him and except for a few times she throws off his advances more or less disgusted at almost every visit.
  • Odie is said to be the stupidest dog in the world in the comics, while in the film he is not so stupid at all.
  • Nermal, known in the comics and cartoons as the cutest kitten in the world, is grown up in the film, although in the comics it is far from fully grown and is practically only in its youth.
